This is a good column. People have not evolved much past the freak shows of the last century. As a collective, we don't seem to mind getting entertainment from watching someone spiral helplessly out of control.
Might as well hook up some cameras in the psych ward of a hospital and call it a reality show -- I'm sure we'd see all kinds of behaviour even funnier than Sheen's.

When I look at this guy, what I see is the degradation of the human soul. Sheen isn't funny -- he's tragic. We shouldn't laugh -- we should look away politely and hope that he gets some help.

Thanks :) I think that's so true - you don't need to look any further than MTV to realise just how primitive our tastes still are.

ITA about all of this. This man is a danger to himself and others and yet the only attention he gets is from the media, not from psychiatrists. Sigh. Thank God his children have been taken away now!

And let’s not forget all that woman beating... oh wait. That’s the one thing that’s barely ever commented on. Because despite abusing women for years (his attacks include shooting his ex-fiancée, striking girlfriends, and threatening to kill ex-wives) this is almost never addressed in the countless interviews with Sheen.

The ability of the public/media to gloss over such things is appalling.
