I've been reading accounts this morning about the airplane landing in the Hudson river. The pilot kept control of his aircraft, behaved in the most professional and expert manner, safely landed his severely damaged plane in a river in such a way as to save the lives of all 155 people on board. In most cases, it's just a colloquialism for 'reallywowamazing'.

Its been the buzz over here in England... and really its been portrayed over here as having the absolute right pilot doing his job exceptionally... he was a fighter pilot and consults on flight safety. And now he can add to that resume (CV) being a hero.

Naw, that guy was just an empty suit, yanno? Coulda been anyone, really. The literal hand of god came down and set that plane safely in the river.

That's a particular double standard that has always bugged me... When someone survives a potentially horrible tragedy, it's always "God saved them". But when anyone (be it a single person, or a few hundred thousand in Darfur) dies, it's never "Yep, God killed 'em dead".

I'll sign off on that annoyance as well. The Pilot was the best possible person to have on hand in such a situation, and was the very definition of a hero, period. God's "involvement" (if you choose to believe he had any) was that he was working that day, period.
