Rogue stood awkwardly in the doorway, shifting her weight from foot to foot as if she couldn’t decide whether to enter the room or not.

John lifted his eyebrow questioningly. “You going to stand there grinning like an idiot, or come in?”

She took a few steps into the room, avoiding John’s stare as she looked around. “I’m not grinning.”

John watched her intently. “He’s not here.”

Rogue took a breath, finally turning her gaze on him, her nervousness causing her Southern accent to thicken. “Ah know that. Ah’m not stupid.”

John flicked his lighter open and closed. “Never said you were.”

Rogue nodded, turning her attention to the music emitting from his stereo. “Who is this?”

“PJ Harvey.”

“Ah like it.”

“I know.”

Rogue looked at him. “How do ya know?”

John cleared his throat, motioning with his hand in her general direction. “You got that, ah, that smile you always get when you like something-music.” He shifted on his bed uncomfortably. “When you like music. You, ah, get it when you like music.” He stared at the flame of his Zippo for a moment before snapping the lid shut and looking at her. “So, you want something?”

“Huh?”

John stood up, taking a couple steps towards her. “Are you here for a particular reason?”

Rogue’s eyes darted around the room, avoiding his stare as her cheeks started to turn pink. “Ah just…Ah wanted to, um…Ah needed to borrow your notes. History notes.” She cleared her throat, risking a quick glance at him. “Ah needed to borrow your history notes.”

John cocked his head to the side as he resumed playing with his lighter. “History notes?”

Rogue nodded. “Yeah, Ah can’t find mine. Thought you might lend me yours.”

John smirked. “You’re kidding right? You know how bad I am at taking notes. Hell, half the time I don’t take ‘em at all. You should ask your boyfriend.”

Rogue’s eyes widened slightly in shock. “Bobby’s not here.”

John took a step closer to her. “I know; we covered that already.”

Rogue looked down at her hands as she tugged on the tips of her gloves nervously. She jerked her head up when she felt John’s hand run through her hair, tucking a few strands behind her ear. Her lips parted in surprise at the gentleness of his gesture.

When she spoke, her voice came out in a quiet whisper. “Be careful.”

John smiled. “Your gift doesn’t scare me.”

Rogue frowned. “Not being able to touch people isn’t a gift, it’s a curse.”

John continued to run his fingers through her hair, careful not to touch her ear. “You can touch people, just not with your skin.” His hand came to rest on her shoulder as he looked into her eyes. “You touched me.”

Rogue frowned. “What?”

John’s hand slipped down her shoulder, slowly moving down her arm, protected by her cardigan. “You’re in my head, all the damn time. I can’t get you out.” His hand stopped when it reached hers, smiling briefly when she made no move to take her hand away. “I want you, Rogue.” He looked down as he laced his fingers through hers. “Untouchability and all.”

Rogue looked at him like a deer caught in headlights. When she started chewing on her bottom lip, it was all John could do to keep from kissing her.

“Tell the truth, Rogue. You’re not here for history notes are you?”

She shook her head.

“Then tell me what you are here for.”

“Ah’m here because Ah…”

“You what?”

Rogue’s eyes dropped to his mouth. She stared at them transfixed, and her cheeks went from pink to red as she watched John lick his lips. She took a deep breath; mustering the courage she needed before leaning up and kissing him quickly. She started to move away but John had hooked his arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him. He looked at her for a moment before pressing his lips to hers, hanging on for as long as possible before he started to feel her mutation. His eyes were a little out of focus when he looked at her again.

Rogue held a hand up to her mouth, her face etched with concern. “I’m sorry.”

John squeezed her hand. “It’s okay.”

She smiled at him with that special smile he knew was just for him. “Can you-can we do it, um, I mean, can we kiss again?”

John smirked. “You don’t need to ask.”

Rogue shrugged. “I don’t want to hurt you.”

“The only thing that’s hurting me right now is not kissing you. Your mutation I can handle.”

He gently guided her to the bed, motioning for her to sit down. He tucked his lighter in his pocket and then headed to his sock drawer. He pulled out a handkerchief and sat on the bed next to Rogue. “Do you trust me?”

Rogue looked from him to the handkerchief and back again. “Tell me that’s clean.”

John chuckled. “Never been used. I bought it especially.”

Rogue raised an eyebrow. “For those special occasions when you bring home those girls with poisonous skin?”

John shook his head, shifting closer to her. “For those special occasions when I got you in my room.”

Rogue rolled her eyes. “You are far too cocky for your own good.”

“But you like that about me, right?”

Rogue lifted a gloved hand and stroked the side of his face. “Sometimes.”

John turned his head and kissed her palm, then lifted the handkerchief up to her mouth. Rogue stayed still as he leant forwards and kissed her experimentally, testing the feel of the material over her lips, getting to know his limits.

Rogue moaned as she felt his tongue through the fabric, her hands tangling themselves in his hair as the kiss deepened. When they broke apart, her breath was coming out unevenly.

She looked at him. “Bobby’s never done that.”

“Bobby’s an idiot.”

Rogue gave him a crooked smile. “Careful what you say about my boyfriend.”

John raised his eyebrow. “He may be your boyfriend, but he’s my best friend. I’ll trash talk him if I want to.”

Rogue giggled as John kissed her neck briefly before pushing her back onto the bed. He swung her legs around, and then gently lay on top of her, careful not to rest all his weight on her. With a nod of consent he placed the handkerchief over her mouth again. In second they became a tangle of limbs, hands roaming everywhere. John moaned as Rogue pushed her tongue into his mouth. His hand slipped up under her cardigan.

Rogue broke the kiss. “Don’t.”

At first, she thought he was going to protest, but then she felt his hand shift so that it was on her thigh. Her grateful smile was hidden by the square of fabric, so she placed her hand on the back of his neck, gently pulling him closer. John got the message and kissed her again.

Rogue suddenly broke away, pulling the handkerchief off her face. “What’s the time?”

John looked at her confused. “What?”

Rogue tried to sit up, but having John resting on her was restricting her movements. “What’s the time?”

John glanced at the digital clock next to his bed. “It’s just after four.”

Rogue was looking more and more worried by the second. This time she pushed John off her. “Bobby’s going to be back any minute.”

John ran a hand through his hair as he watched Rogue stand and smooth down her clothes. “So?”

“He doesn’t deserve this.”

“Maybe not, but he should still know. Unless this is just some game for you.”

Rogue looked at him like he’d just slapped her. She stood in front of him, her hand on his cheek. “This isn’t a game.”

John looked at her, his eyes searching hers. “Then what is it?”

Rogue chewed on her bottom lip. Before she could answer him, they heard footsteps getting closer to the room. Rogue took a few hasty steps backwards, sitting down on Bobby’s bed. John arranged himself on his bed, pulling out his lighter and started playing with it.

Bobby came in and kissed Rogue lightly on the top of her head. “Hey you two, what’s going on here?”

Rogue’s eyes darted briefly at John before looking at her boyfriend. “I, ah, we…”

John snapped his lighter shut, looking at Bobby. “I was just exposing Rogue here to some new music. Thought her taste could do with a little broadening. There’s only so much Garbage a guy can listen to.”

Bobby nodded as he turned to drop his books onto his desk. “So you want to go hang out for a bit?”

Rogue tugged on her gloves nervously. “All three of us?”

Bobby nodded. “Yeah. Is that a problem?”

John cleared his throat. “I just think that maybe I scared your girlfriend with a little too much PJ Harvey.”

Bobby looked at his best friend. “Um, okay.” He turned his gaze on Rogue. “So, just the two of us?”

Rogue nodded. Bobby walked out of the room and she looked back at John who just arched an eyebrow and mouthed ‘see you tomorrow.’

She nodded in the affirmative before quickly walking out of the room blushing.
