Err.... cats are fairly intelligent and low-maintenance. Very independent creatures. They can be moody, though, if not treated well.

I admit I don't know anything about rats...

Hm, yes. I guess my biggest concern with a cat was taking care of a kitten.

I have never owned a rat, but I heard many good things from various enthusiasts on the Internet. Particularly that they are intelligent animals... but there are too many medical complications, since they're susceptible to cancer.

My options are narrowed down to a python or a cat.

You can always... adopt an older cat.

However... I would still suggest a kitten. Yes... it can be very... tiring... but they're so full of energy...

Well, I just got a dog, ma'am, and he is the greatest friend I've ever had! He's smart and sweet and always greets me when I return home!
