Legalizing Prostitution

May 08, 2005 15:57

This is a taboo topic in many societies and the opinions vary on the spectrum of acceptance or banishment. The issue that will be presented today asks a few questions and will give you a few thoughts to ponder about, but the main debate is whether or not prostitution should be legalized. Many European countries have adapted this trend of ( Read more... )

I actually watched a "Dr. Phil" program the other day about this kind of subject. He was discussing actual brothels that were legalized in the US. Honestly, I had NO clue that such things were allowed to be legalized ( ... )

Sad but true. The problem may not be as noticeable as in some other places around the world, but it's here. I know for years, I thought that "hookers" hung out in Halifax, but a couple of years ago, I heard otherwise.

I think that Canada's government should be doing more than just arresting these women for a short period of time, and then throw them back onto the streets to the only life they are used to. There is no way I believe ANYONE wants to do this to themselves, I may be wrong, but other than the money, or a person who's lived a life of sexual abuse and is stuck in a cycle of sorts, I cannot see why else they'd do it.

So, I think when these women are arrested, they should be given opportunitites to better themselves, offer them education, a job, therapy, ANYTHING!! I believe with a bit of guidance, these women(or even men) will learn to love themselves again, and respect themselves a lot more. Not only that, but the spread of disease via prostitution will as well be cut down.

I agree totally!! Education is the key!! Sex education especially. Surprisingly enough, you'd think in today's world, school's would be more open about a topic that used to be "taboo" but in actuality, they aren't. I know people who've graduated from high school and haven't received ANY form of sex ed...I only had half a semester of it myself in my 13 years of schooling. We just learn the "stone cold facts", the mechanics of sex, and a brief chat on STD's.

We need former prostitutes to come into our school and tell their horror stories!! That yes, the money might be great AT FIRST, but the overall mental anguish just isn't worth it.

And let's not stop here, let's bring in people who are willing to talk about experiences with rape, hate crimes, racism, etc. I think this kind of education would hit home a helluva lot harder then reading from a text book.

Scare tactics aren't always the solution. Yes it is informative, but we must hear both pros and cons of this "profession". I must agree with maskedgirl in all of her findings that we must be more open-minded about the choices these women make. They are made for a reason: well, in many circumstances prostitutes are forced into this business by pimps and even other family members. Some just enjoy having sex with strangers so they choose to actually have another advantage: money. Yes there are bad experiences, but these women need to be educated that there are other options out there other than to walk the streets.

I even have a friend right now who falls under the "sex-with-strangers-enjoyment" category and she told me that her and her friend also involved are going to start doing it for money. She knows of the dangers with violence and STD's, but it's the lifestyle she's choosing right now. Of course she has other options and doesn't even need to get a job since her parents help provide for her, but it's a choice she's making. I'm ( ... )

I have to disagree with your opinion that scare tactics aren't always the solution. People will already know that the money in prostitution is good, that's easy to know. They need to know the brutal honest truth about the profession, and can only truly learn by hearing from someone who's been there and been "burned".

I certainly don't find it appropriate to bring a debate to a school, to teach high school students(for example)the "pros" of prostitution. That doesn't make any sense to me.

I am not normally a close-minded person. There's only a few issues that I cannot open my mind too. For example, I cannot open my mind to seeing child molesters in a "good light", nor can I see promoting prostitution as moral ( ... )
