If Hermione had been - consciously or subconsciously - seeking a mate purely on his ability to introduce her to magical society wouldn't she (a) have shown *some* signs of such effort, and (b) have cast her net wider? Neville was a much better choice - pureblood and rich (well, at least not poor).I would tend to agree about the casting the net wider point. Regarding Neville specifically, though... well, I like him, but he might as well have been wearing a sign saying "loser" for the first few years of school. Similarly, Percy would have been a much better match for Hermione's personality, but he was below-average in popularity. (Maybe not unpopular, but we really have no information beyond what Harry and the other Weasleys think of him.) Whether it's conscious or subconscious, Hermione isn't going to think of either one of them as providing a path to acceptance in the WW ( ... )
