Marrying In: Pureblood Wizards’ Attraction for Muggleborn Witches
This is actually a response to the numerous posts about the Hermione/Ron ship in the responses to GoF 10: Mayhem at the Ministry.
Sorry, I’m very slow. But I think this is relevant to that debate.

I would tend to agree about the casting the net wider point. Regarding Neville specifically, though... well, I like him, but he might as well have been wearing a sign saying "loser" for the first few years of school. Similarly, Percy would have been a much better match for Hermione's personality, but he was below-average in popularity. (Maybe not unpopular, but we really have no information beyond what Harry and the other Weasleys think of him.) Whether it's conscious or subconscious, Hermione isn't going to think of either one of them as providing a path to acceptance in the WW.
Also, for what it's worth, Ron and Neville are the only two pureblood boys in her year of Gryffindor. (She also does quickly absorb that Gryffindor = best idea -- before she gets to the school, even.)
