It is more than five years to the day since Robin had said he was going to war and almost one since he had returned, but still Marian cannot put the day of his announcement out of her mind. She’d been an innocent girl back then, naive to the ways of the world. Time and hardship had forced her to grow up and open her eyes to the sufferings around her. He’d changed too; there was a shadow in his eyes now that crept past his playful, overconfident exterior. Clearly it wasn’t glory he had found in warfare, but something altogether darker and more savage that he had imagined. They were neither of them the same people they had been before he left.
She wonders if, had she been the stronger person she was now, things might have turned out quite differently. She had given up without a fight; she’d blamed him for abandoning her before he’d even packed up his belongings. Suppose she had fought harder? Could she have convinced him to stay?
Marian knows it is futile to hope for a return to the past, that she could undo the words that she saw now as her mistake, but she still cannot help but wish it were possible.
