Morning was well established by the time the two men surfaced, hair still wet from their shower. Jared watched, fascinated by the contrast between the lover and soldier, as Jensen surveyed the parking lot. He twitched his head, motioning Jared towards the room where the two girls and Josh were stationed. Jared let his eyes wander across the cars but they were all empty. He caught Jensen's approving nod and grinned at him as he knocked on the door. He wasn't expecting the handgun jammed into his ribs as the door cracked open. "Don't move!"
"Did I do it right, Josh?" Megan's voice slipped through the space as Jared raised his hands defensively.
"Sure did, princess. That was just perfect but I reckon that's really your brother, yeah? You wanna let 'em in?" Josh prompted.
Megan pulled the door open, "Oh, yeah. Oops?"
"Hey little sis, looking good," Jared blinked at Megan who was beaming up at him and holding the gun that looked far too big for her.
"Josh gave it to me, said we'd need," she faltered a little, trying to recall the words, "someone pretty to intimidate the crap outta men who underestimate what women can do!"
"Ain't no one gonna underestimate you with that cannon in your hand," Jared smirked.
He looked at Josh and nodded his thanks. He wasn't exactly thrilled to see his baby sister with a gun but he couldn't deny that they'd need every gun they could muster to make it out of the city. Still between the Beretta that Sam was given, and Jared hoped that he could at least persuade Jensen to let them keep it, and the Colt that he had stashed away, that he also had to negotiate for, and now Megan's new shiny, they had a fighting chance. Well, a fighting chance against geriatric outlaws who only came at them in single file, but it was a start.
"So how you doing today, Munchkin?" he asked, ruffling her hair as she put the gun back down on the table.
"Wasn't feeling too good when I woke up, but I'm better now," she was practically bubbly, "Josh held my hair and was very nice about the whole thing."
"Good job he was here then."
Looking beyond his sister to the other bed, he was delighted to see Sam sitting up, dressed and laughing at Megan's antics. Moving closer, Jared checked her over. Her hand was across her stomach, holding it gingerly. He could see the sparks of pain in her eyes as she laughed, but she wasn't stopping.
Jensen patted his arm reassuringly as he moved past to sit on the side of her bed.
"How you doing this morning, Miss Ferris?" he asked, quiet and polite.
"Well, honey, I feel like I've just gotten walked over by a steer gone wild but apart from that I'm just peachy. How you doing?" she asked, a glint in her eye.
"Well, I'm doing good. Got me a fantastic night's sleep, a good shower and I'm about ready to hit the open road. Don't get much better than that!"
"Suppose not. Just tell me you boys were safe."
"SAM!" Jared exclaimed.
"Well, ma'am, if you'll pardon me, that's between me and him but I'll let it slide just this once. You don't got anythin' to worry about." Jensen grinned.
She smiled at his answer, "I raised the boy from he was six months old, got to be a habit making sure he's healthy and happy."
Jensen nodded, "Yeah, and he's lucky to have you. Gonna need to keep him outta trouble 'til you guys get settled."
"Why, baby, you just done described my full time job!"
Jared protested, "Hey, thought you were supposed to be on my side."
"Sweet-cheeks, I've always been on your side, but ain't nobody said a thing about how I gotta keep my mouth shut while doin' it," she smirked, "Not even your daddy could pay me enough for that!"
The whole room quietened. Sam caught what she said and her hands flew to her mouth, "Oh baby, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean..."
Jared held up a hand, stopping her in her tracks, "It's okay, Sam, it's a fact, he's gone. We're dealing, aren't we, Megan?"
Megan curled into her big brother's side, slipping under his arm, "Yeah, we're getting there."
Jensen looked at Josh and moved away from the bed, letting the almost family have a moment together. Jared and Megan shuffled over to the bed, moving to sit down beside her, quietly chatting and hugging as Josh and Jensen checked out the maps. Jared's eyes kept travelling to Jensen, bent over the table.
"Go on, honey, you should probably be part of the planning," Sam shoved him gently, "Besides, if you stare a hole right through his leathers, he ain't gonna have no amour on his ass, now is he?"
Jared blushed bright red, “Sam, stop!”
She laughed as he hauled himself to his feet and wandered over to the table.
"So, I reckon if we go out under the underpass that'll give us free rein to get outta the city. It's Napalm Death territory but they're not gonna hit us, not after last month's little transaction," Jensen traced a route on the map, looking up when Jared approached but flicked his eyes back to Josh, not pausing in explaining his plan, "Will need you to grab another car before we leave, you think we can do that?"
"Why do we need another car?" Jared asked, puzzled.
Jensen took a deep breath and looked up at Jared, "Cause once we get outta the town you'll be on your own and you'll need a car. We'll stock up with water, food and everything you need to keep you going until you hit another town. I'd suggest that you head for some border town, set up fresh and tell everyone you got tired of city life. Christ, half of them will tell you the same story just with different names and places. You'll have a chance to start fresh, get a job, get a life away from Kane."
Jared couldn't speak for a moment, "You're not coming with? I mean we could..."
"Nah, man, we got family up past the hills," Jensen said, his hand scrubbing his hair, "We're gonna go hide out there until the city's forgotten about this. Couple of months, maybe a little more, but ain't no way Kane's gonna track us back there."
Josh cut in, "And even if he does, we've a whole hell of a lot of firepower for him to deal with. We'll make sure that he doesn't pick up your scent, Jared, don't worry on that score."
Jared clamped his jaw shut until he was damn sure he wasn't going to say something stupid before plastering a fake smile on his face, "Ya know what? I'm a little thirsty. There's a soda machine outside, anyone want anything while I'm going?"
Everyone shook their heads and Jared was off, through the door before anyone could say anything. He walked, ran to the vending machine and dropped a dollar in. The machine whirred and clicked and then the light went out. Jared thumped the coin return button but nothing happened.
"Shit! Shit! Shit! Fucking shit!"
The words were punctuated with hits and kicks at the busted down machine, but it made no difference.
"Seem to be taking it a might personal there, Jay," Jensen's voice came from beside him.
Jared looked up to the mercenary leaning back against the wall.
"Damned thing took my dollar and didn't give me anything for it."
Jensen looked at him, "But that ain't what got you all pissed up, is it?"
Jared shrugged, "Doesn't matter."
"I think the two women back there who are scratching their heads think different. Ya wanna tell me what's going on?"
"Told you, doesn't matter. It's my shit to deal with."
"True enough," Jensen agreed, "But I, we, need your head in the game for the move this afternoon, and if this is going to affect you, then I need to know."
Jared whacked the machine again, "My head will be in the game, don't worry about that. And we'll follow your plan, but then we're done, yeah?"
"That's the plan," Jensen's eyes were squinted against the sun.
"Then let's do it," Jared said, squaring his shoulders and heading back to the room.
"Jay, talk to me," Jensen reached out, catching his arm as he walked past.
"Look, just because I put your dick in my mouth don't mean I owe you anything, Jensen."
"And I don't think they heard you cross the county line," Jensen threw back.
"Screw you," Jared cursed.
"Done that too if I remember rightly."
"What's your problem?" Jared asked, throwing his arms into the air.
"My problem is that your head is so far up your ass, that I'm not sure you can spot an enemy coming at you if he was waving submachine guns!"
Jared turned to glare at the mercenary, lip drawing back, "Let go of me!"
Jensen loosed his grip, taking a step back with hands raised and eyebrow quirked. Jared shrugged him off and moved into the parking lot. He watched the cars going by on the road just outside, imports that had seen better days, home grown and mods. He watched a bus stop and pull off again. Finally, he turned to Jensen who hadn't budged so much as an inch.
"It's nothing, just my own twisted mind working to screw me over," he started. "It'll be fine once we get some distance. I dunno, I just thought..." he stopped.
"Yeah?" prompted Jensen.
"Nothing, never mind. I'll be good by the time we need to move."
Jensen watched him for a long moment and then pushed himself off the wall to head back to the motel room. He stopped just before he got to the door and turned to look at Jared, "I'm here if you need to talk."
"Thanks, man," Jared replied.
He had no intention of talking to the cause of his current confusion, and especially no intention of telling him that somewhere along the way his wires had been crossed. Christ, he was used to sleeping with random guys and then splitting, so it shouldn't feel this bad having the same done. Was it the fact that it was working in reverse, that someone was running on him? Or was it something else? He ran a hand through his floppy hair, pushing it back into place.
No it wasn't the fact that Jensen was cutting out first, it was something more. Last night they'd clicked, or Jared had thought that they had. Everything had been better, more intense. They'd moved like they knew each other, not afraid to talk and tell each other what they wanted, what they needed. Jared couldn’t' remember the last time he'd trusted someone enough to find out that he snored, that the golden boy was less than perfect, but with Jensen it was comfortable, and he guessed he'd hoped that Jensen felt the same way. But it was obvious that Jensen was a mercenary in all senses of the word.
Shit, he had to get over this and fast if he was going to be any good. He had to focus on Megan and Sam, had to keep them safe. That alone should be enough for him to keep his head in the race. It had to be.
He shook his head, thinking about the whole situation. They were leaving the city, Josh was grabbing them a car and that was it. No more Dallas. No more clubs, no more drunken debauchery and having Sam or JD yelling at him. It was gonna be tough but maybe Megan would be better off out of the city, around normal kids who did normal kid stuff that didn't include learning to run a sixteen billion dollar empire or how to manipulate the books just enough to screw the city revenue commissioners. They needed to go to a town where the cops weren't crooked, and corp law didn't govern who could breathe and who couldn't.
He exhaled long and slow, drawing himself back together. Time to move.
