I was totally the same way about ATLA, I kept hearing about how good it was, people kept recommending it for me, but I just really couldn't bring myself to get into it. Then I forced myself to sit down and watch all three seasons and was just floored by how awesome it was.

And I hear you about the Aang/Katara thing. The age gap isn't that big of a deal when say... you're in your twenties and I actually find it awesome when the difference is in the woman's favour, but it's pretty considerable for their ages. Then there's the whole Katara seems more like a surrogate mother to Aang than anything and that just squicks me.

*nods* I suspect that the characterisation - and character arcs - are so strong that you really have to watch it properly to appreciate it. It wasn't until I'd seen enough bits and pieces to get a feel for that characters that I started thinking maybe there was something to the hype...

Yeah, I kind of vary between "Well, that's sweet" and "..." with the 'shippy moments for those two. It seems to be handled fairly well (from what I've seen?) but that mother vibe just makes things awkward.

Now I have Weird Al in my head. "He's just nine and she's fourteen..."
