I've been watching M*A*S*H on DVD, and it is bizarre how different the show is without the laughter track. I'm used to seeing it as reruns on TV, where turning the laughter off isn't an option. Watching it without that is like... a different show. Bleaker, I suppose, and oddly, I actually find myself feeling more sympathy for Frank Burns. Some of ( Read more... )

Did I know you watched M*A*S*H? :O That's been one of my mother's favorite shows from the beginning, so my sister and brother and I all grew up with it. I did not realize that the laugh tracks weren't included on dvd, either! That makes the dvds that much more tempting.

Otherwise, I tend to agree with you. Frank's a rather nasty person, but Hawkeye and Trapper and BJ didn't always have the high ground, either. My very favorite episodes are those that happen after BJ, Colonel Potter, and Charles have joined the cast, but before Radar left. I think BJ, Potter, and Charles are much more interesting and likable characters than Trapper, Henry, and Frank (not least because BJ and Potter believed in being faithful to their wives *facepalm*), and Klinger's just not the same when he stops cross-dressing and becomes a serious clerk.

Anyway. :p

And thanks for the rec! *blushes*

I watched MASH for all of the seasons. I also thought Trapper and Hawkeye, especially, weren't always the nicest of people and they played tricks on Frank that they shouldn't have done. It was a great show, though, even with the laugh track.

I think MASH is a show that changes from what you remember it being as a child and then watching it again as an adult. Frank is rather pathetic and you do begin to feel sorry for him rather than being amused by his humiliation...
