Not really, but he becomes an important hinge for several characters you will (hopefully) like.

I've been trying to work out if he's an antagonist, given that he keeps reminiscing about killing people, or just a not-particularly-likable protagonist. I thought it would be a bit unusual to introduce the antagonist before anyone else. :p
