Good on you! And thanks for an additional reason not to join Facebook ("I'm sure it's lovely, but a friend of mine reliably informs me that it has a tendency to go feral. It's just not worth taking the chance."), although my standby of "The temperature in Hell isn't low enough yet" has served me well on that score.
Good luck with the letter writing. I've bought myself a set of Basildon Bond for that purpose myself, although I'm afraid that it remains unopened as yet! Choir and/or drama group is a great idea. I'm in a drama group myself, and another LJ friend of mine (well, another real friend who happens to have an LJ account) has recently joined a barber-shop choir, and is loving it
