Good on you! And thanks for an additional reason not to join Facebook ("I'm sure it's lovely, but a friend of mine reliably informs me that it has a tendency to go feral. It's just not worth taking the chance."), although my standby of "The temperature in Hell isn't low enough yet" has served me well on that score.
Good luck with the letter writing. I've bought myself a set of Basildon Bond for that purpose myself, although I'm afraid that it remains unopened as yet! Choir and/or drama group is a great idea. I'm in a drama group myself, and another LJ friend of mine (well, another real friend who happens to have an LJ account) has recently joined a barber-shop choir, and is loving it.
On postponing your life waiting for someone else, there is a Dr Seuss book that we got for the kids years ago, that is a cut above the rest of his output. It borders on actually being inspiring actually. It's called "The Places You'll Go", and is a typically surreal analogy for the ups and downs of life. There's a passage in that specifically about waiting, and the need to break free of it. You might have already read it, but I shall quote the passage below in any case. Do bear in mind that it's a children's book - it's a great sentiment, but it's not exactly Tennyson...
You can get so confused that you’ll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place… for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go or the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite or waiting around for Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.
No! That’s not for you! Somehow you’ll escape all that waiting and staying. You’ll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing. With banner flip-flapping, once more you’ll ride high! Ready for anything under the sky.
Glad you like it. I will, as you suggest, send it via LJ private message, as your email account seens to have got itself on my Spam-trap's list, as I keep getting dodgy URLs sent which alledge that they are from you.

I shall print this out and pin it to the wall:}
PM me your address and I'll write to you so you can start using your stationery. It doesn't have to be on a regular basis.
