So much had happened lately, meetings and late nights working and kittens... Spock's note to them came out of the blue, and when Bones went to find out what was going on, he discovered that Spock had already left

When Bones mentioned he'd invited Joanna over for a dinner, he went to stay that he could make himself scare for a while so they could talk, but the look in Bones' eyes said for him to stay. So, he asked if he could stay and eat with them. The grateful expression proved his guess right. He knew.. things hadn't been great between the two of them, though to be honest he couldn't have said 100% why things weren't great between them. He knew a little bit of it, but not everything.
...Now their quarters smelled like thanksgiving dinner, and he was starving. "We have the best galley in the Fleet," Jim said, drooling over the stuffing. "If you don't keep me from it, I'm going to eat every bit of this stuffing and no one else is getting any."
"This is cornbread dressing," Bones said seriously, fluffing it with a fork before putting the lid back on. "Stuffing is somethin' else entirely." And not nearly as good.
He was more pleased than he could say, Jim wanting to stay and be with them. As strained as things had been between he and Joanna, things between he and Jim hadn't ever been better. Everything just clicked, like a lock sliding into place, and Bones couldn't ever remember being more content.
Jim just raised his brows in Bones' direction. "The hell? It's stuffing. Dressing is stuff you put on salads." He tried to slip his hand in there to snag some of the STUFFING, but was denied by the lid.
Jim was happy. It was a strange thing to think, or even feel, but he was. The only dark spot in it all was Spock's sudden leaving, not so long after telling him that he got offered a spot as Captain on another ship.
There are some things that Bones knew Jim would never understand, being the uncultured Midwestern farm boy that he was, and good southern food was one of them. "This ain't stuffing, Jim."
Jim did look hungry, so Bones pulled off a piece of the turkey and tucked it into Jim's mouth. "How's that?" he asked, his voice low.
