A beach on Risa... (Kirk/McCoy)

Aug 10, 2009 21:56

After finishing his conversation with George, Bones remained sitting down, listening to the waves, the birds flying overhead, and the wind blowing softly through the trees. He didn't spot another person, though. They were truly by themselves here ( Read more... )

When the transport finished, Kirk took a slow, deep breath. Crimson light from two setting suns curled around him, making him look out over the beautiful ocean. He smiled slowly, feeling a bit of himself relax even if his chest still felt like it was in a vice.

He hunched his shoulder, turning to go find the bedroom, when he caught a beautiful sight. Bones was laid out in a chair, book on his chest, asleep, caught in the last of the sun's rays. Kirk bit his lip, and ducked away only long enough to put his bag in the bedroom before coming back out.

He slowly sat down on the ground beside the chair, just laying his head on Bones' thigh. He didn't want to wake the doctor... Bones just looked to peaceful. Kirk closed his own eyes, ignoring his aching hands, and let himself drift slowly. Not quite asleep... just... resting.

"You feel like that sometimes?" he asked, genuinely curious. "Like you know what's going to happen? Or even that something is going to happen?"

Kirk stopped eating, propping up his jaw on a palm as he thought about it. Finally, cautiously, he said, "...sometimes, I get an urge. I dunno. I never really think about it when its happening. Or most of the time after wards. But like..." Hesitation, then quietly, "Like I got the urge to write down this crazy drunk guy who sat down next to me on the shuttle on the way to Starfleet as my emergency contact information. And look how that turned out." A tiny smirk.

"Yeah, look what you got stuck with," he chuckled, recalling getting that first call in the middle of the night - someone named Kirk brought in to the school infirmary drunk and busted up, couldn't be released on his own, McCoy was listed as fucking 'next of kin', someone had to go get him...

The start of a beautiful friendship.

"Now, some would just call that bad intuition," he joked, his face settling into something more open and curious. "What about the other stuff though. I-"

Hesitating because he wasn't sure how to say it. "You knew what we had to do with the Romulans. I mean, everyone was saying one thing, but you knew what plan would work. Is that sort of what you mean?"

"Fuck no, that was the best intuition yet." Kirk smirked, but then relaxed again as well.

"...Yea. I didn't really think of it at the time, but when I had some time to actually THINK about it? It was. I knew we had to go after him. I mean, that was it. I just KNEW. It isn't like... a leap of faith, it isn't a known conclusion. I just know... sometimes... something has to be done.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really stop me from doing things I shouldn't."

"What shouldn't you be doing, Jim?" he said with a chuckle, then stopped, his face sort of falling.

It quickly settled into something casual, undisturbed. "I mean, all in all, things have a way of working out for you, wouldn't you say?"

"Hasn't ever told me to 'not hit the big guy in the face when three of his buddies are around'." Kirk laughed a little, then nudged Bones under the table foot-to-leg.

"I dunno, not completely. I don't know if Spock's right, honestly, but... maybe he is."

"So, your intuition's gonna keep you alive, but it likes to see you roughed up a little," Bones joked, pressing back with his leg. "That's brilliant, really."

A quiet moment passed, Bones looking deep in thought before he spoke again. "How did you find me down there?" he asked suddenly. He didn't explain what he was talking about - Jim would know.

"Sounds kinda like you." Kirk teased right back, but the mention of... that made the smile fall from his lips.

"...luck." He whispered quietly. "Spock's tricorder, some dumb ass luck, and someone on the surface who decided to help us without even saying a word."

"Hey, don't go there," Bones told him, reaching out for Jim's hand. He rubbed over the skin gently with his thumb, small circles on his skin.

"I just wondered, maybe..." he laughed a little, "I guess your intuition's limited to saving your ass," he pushed his plate to the side, "which is why I should probably staying as close to you as I can."

"...I don't know what it can do. I've never... really even thought about it." Kirk admitted, looking down to their touching hands. He curved his hand so their fingers latched together.

"If I knew how to include everyone on the ship, I would. If I couldn't... I'd be happy knowing it could save your ass too. But..."

He hesitated, and said with a tiny smirk, "I'd be happy if you stuck close to my ass as well." To anyone else, it would have been a normal Kirk-perverted comment.

Meant a lot more then that.

...Meant the pervertness a little though.

Bones chuckled at that, his own face flushed - and not just because of the sexual nature of the comment. Jim talked like that, yeah, but you had to know him to tell when there was something else there. Just an inflection, a word choice, the way he wouldn't look at you. It was like a slightly different dialect of a familiar language.

"Glad to hear it," his voice dropped to a low growl. "Now finish," Leonard told Jim, pointing to his plate as he stood, taking his own to the kitchen.

He came back to the table with two more beers. "You need to see this beach up close, it's just amazing," he told him.

"Yes, Mom." Kirk said with a laugh, and dug in with relish.

"Thanks." He accepted one of the beers and popped it open, taking a long swig. Fuck, it felt amazing. He eyed Bones over the bottle, may or may not have done a slightly lewd thing with his tongue as he finished, and raised his brows. "Yea? ..."

A hesitation, then carefully, "Well, you'll have to show me it."

Bones was not staring intently at Jim's mouth as he settled back into his chair. Not in the slightest...

"Yeah..." he nodded, catching Jim's eye as he took a long, deep drink himself, swallowing slowly. Setting the bottle on the table, his thumb ran slowly over the lip of the bottle while his hand gripped the neck, his eyes never leaving Jim's face.

"We'll go later, when you're done eating," he said slowly.

And Kirk was, of course, not staring at Bones' throat as it flexed while it swallowed or making several immediate mental images about what that thumb could be doing.

"...Lotta things I want to do later." Kirk rumbled low in the back of his throat, tugging a piece of steak off the fork with his teeth.

"You should make a list then," Bones answered casually, leaning forward as Jim ate. "So you don't forget."
