A beach on Risa... (Kirk/McCoy)

Aug 10, 2009 21:56

After finishing his conversation with George, Bones remained sitting down, listening to the waves, the birds flying overhead, and the wind blowing softly through the trees. He didn't spot another person, though. They were truly by themselves here ( Read more... )

When the transport finished, Kirk took a slow, deep breath. Crimson light from two setting suns curled around him, making him look out over the beautiful ocean. He smiled slowly, feeling a bit of himself relax even if his chest still felt like it was in a vice.

He hunched his shoulder, turning to go find the bedroom, when he caught a beautiful sight. Bones was laid out in a chair, book on his chest, asleep, caught in the last of the sun's rays. Kirk bit his lip, and ducked away only long enough to put his bag in the bedroom before coming back out.

He slowly sat down on the ground beside the chair, just laying his head on Bones' thigh. He didn't want to wake the doctor... Bones just looked to peaceful. Kirk closed his own eyes, ignoring his aching hands, and let himself drift slowly. Not quite asleep... just... resting.

Kirk raised a brow, "Oh yea?" Must have been the gossip Bones had been indicating before. "What happened? And how is he, anyway?" He'd felt the joy like a sledgehammer to the skull.

Leonard's experience with the bond had been more subdued. "He's really happy," he said thoughtfully, having felt wave after wave of relief and joy and so much love it had nearly staggered him for a moment. "They all were."

Then he stopped, recalling the scene. "Chapel," he said. "Their Nurse Chapel. You should have seen the look on her face when they started huggin'. Thought she was gonna cry." Turning to Jim, he clarified. "Spock or me, I dunno which but she's got it bad for one of 'em."

Kirk's eyes went wide, thinking of the pretty older woman tearing up. "OH no..." He just shook his head, "Oh fuck, one of them just broke her heart." He could grasp that quickly enough. "...poor thing. That just... fucking sucks."

"It wasnt pretty," he agreed, flipping the steaks. "Jim was doing his best to comfort her, looked like, 's how I know it wasn't him..." He stayed quiet a bit longer, pondering how the reality of their bond was going to affect the other people in their lives.

For a split second he looked at Jim, wondering if what was happening between them was going to affect anyone on their ship. He didn't think so, wasn't anyone else's damned business... Yeah, he thought wryly. Keeping it secret? On a starship? Not likely.

"That bond thing they've got's pretty strong. Probably never even noticed her... but Jim, Jim knows that sorta thing." But something came over his face when he mentioned his other-self. He took another drink, nose wrinkling slightly as if getting a foul taste out of his mouth, and smacked his mouth when he was done very audibly.

"What," he asked, catching Jim's expression out of the corner of his eye. "You know something else 'bout it?" he asked, curious.

"...I dunno." He frowned, looking off into the distance. "I talked with Spock - the older one, the bonded one - for a long time the other day. He was telling me how his Jim had ... something." A tap to the temple. "Something that told him things."

"Besides a brain?" he joked. Then he saw the intent look on Jim's face. "What sort of thing?" he asked more seriously. "Like, precognition or something like that?"

"Good term for it. We've been using 'intuition'." Kirk did look serious about this. "...He said... humans are mind-blind, whatever that means exactly, but some humans... aren't. Thinks his Jim is one of them." But what did that say about this Jim?

"Research says humans use a fraction of the potential of their minds. I'm not sure how much of that I subscribe to, but..." Leonard shrugged, "some people have been shown to be able to be able to predict events or somehow anticipate scenarios before they occur."

He watched Jim's face, wondering what was going on in there. He has a suspicion... "Spock have any sort of hard data for this, or is it all just observations he's made over the years?" he asked.

"Hand me that plate," he told Jim, turning off the grill. "These are ready."

Kirk got up and grabbed the plate, holding it out so Bones could load it up. "Look perfect. And... I think he's just going off of a long time of knowing his Jim."

They headed over to the table with the incredible view of the ocean, sat down, and Leonard began tucking in as soon as his plate was filled.

"Did he ask you about- about you?" he wondered, wishing he'd been a fly on the wall of that conversation. Mr Spock seemed fond of Jim, and Bones was sure he wouldn't ever do anything that would purposefully hurt Jim. But still, he wanted to know.

Both suns were completely gone now, and the stars seemed brighter here than he'd ever seen them on Earth. They both seemed more relaxed too - the incredible surroundings, the cool ocean breeze, the beer, the casual, utterly normal (well, normal for them) conversation... it all felt good, right.

Kirk sat down so he could have just a good a view... of stars, ocean, and Bones. He closed his eyes, not immediately eating, just enjoying the smell of good food and salty air. The cool breeze felt perfect, refreshing.

"...you mean if I have the same thing?" He remarked quietly before digging in as well.

"Yeah," he answered, watching Jim as he ate. "What spurred on that conversation?"

A little gesture with his fork, "Actually just sort of came up. It's weird... just a few days ago? I asked Jim about that. If he felt like... he got intuitions he shouldn't have." An intuition of itself, it seemed.
