"Well?" Cliff asked. "How're we gonna get ourselves outta this one?"

"Most likely, they have that thing in the basement. It would be too large to hide anywhere else. And if it goes off, then this police cordon is a joke. the mutagen will spread from here to Palo Alto."

"I can get into the basement unseen," Gar offers. "And then open a new path."

Mento knows what Gar and cliff are capable of, but Gar's girlfriend is a bigger question.

"You there. I know you're a shapeshifter of some kind. What are your capabilities?"

Inside, it's quiet - too quiet. The move is on them.

Fauna's taking a subtler approach. She looks over at some seagulls. "Hey, I think those guys have food hidden in their jackets. If not, then the trash can they're standing by has some really greasy wrappers in it..."

It works for a moment. The gulls dive bomb the foot soldiers.  The victory is short-lived as they pull out guns and firing on both the birds and anything around them, Fauna included.

The gulls scatter, thankfully.

"So much for quiet!"

She uses a flea's jump to cross the distance, and rapidly shifts into a two legged bear, picking one up and throwing him at his partner.

Gar charges the basement in manticore form, hoping to intimidate his opponents out of his way. Quiet seems out of the question now...

He was hoping to focus the gunfire on him. Well, first rule of superherouing - no plan suvives contact with the enemy.

God, he can practically hear Caulder over the coms, the Chief's calm voice and dry wit, always just a few seconds ahead of everyone in perception...

He waves his hand and the helmet hums as the incoming backup is thrown against the wall.

"Seriously, Mento," Gar asks as they move towards the basement, "do you really believe all that stuff about the Chief?"

"I had all his notes, and over fifteen years to study them. I didn't want to believe it at first, but..."

He turns around, waves his hand, and sends a heavy prop cart to block the door behind them.

"The Chief was a lot of things, Garfield. But most of all, he was right, and he always could see that second ahead of everyone else."

SFPD works quickly. The scene's cordoned off, the Diablo agents are rounded up. Many of them are taken alive, to their disappointment.

It is a mess - squad cars, fire trucks, hazmat...The FBI and ATF got called.

The head of the rescue effort comes forward to brief the three.

Gar sits quietly, cooperating as best he can. Steve is dead.

Almost everyone from the old Doom Patrol days. Just like Rita. The Chief. Larry.

It hasn't fully sunk in yet that Steve is gone.

Jesus. Dayton too. Sure, Cliff had never really liked the stuck-up rich wannabe... except for the fact that he'd made Rita happy. And if there was one dame who'd been an excellent judge of character, it'd be been Rita.

The Chief. Rita. Larry. Arani. Scott. Josh. Kate. Dorthy.

Him and Gar were pretty much it.

Aurora just puts an arm around Gar's shoulders. "Lemme know what you need."
