Gliding on the Wind

She's still not any closer to peace then she was back then. At least she's stopped trying to date, or deal with other heroes because she knows she's too messed up for them. Kendra has been managing St. Roch at a reasonable level of scum. Hawkgirl has finally come to one conclusion. This is Purgatory. When she slit her wrists she was an idiot ( Read more... )

She moves her knees into her chest. "The last part of his soul took me months to find," she admits. "Though if I had just...listened to myself, I would have been here sooner." Kendra lolls her head around her shoulders, trying to lessen the tension. It's not working. "It's like there's this person in me, trying to bend me to her. The more I fight, the more tired I get...the more I resent it. It's like mind control only it's...you. It's everything - not 'everything' you are, but it colors everything." She tightens more into herself. "I owe Carter to get him back. I just...have no idea what to do when he comes back. If he comes back in my lifetime, and I don't trust myself to be myself anymore."

The she looks up. "I'm making no damn sense, am I?"

"No, no, you're... it makes sense to me. It might not to other people, but it does to me."

He shakes his head, settling down next to her with a sigh. It's honestly pretty disconcerting how familiar this all sounds when he lets himself think on it too much.

He offers her another drink of the water he's distilled and leans back against the crop of rocks behind him.

"Why?" She gets up and stretches. "Why does this make sense to everyone but me?" she shakes her head. "I know, I'm being a whiny little brat, but I'm serious." She flexes her fingers in front of her in frustration.

"I've seen whinier." Roy assures her, then... "I'm pretty sure it's gotta be like trying to put on a hand puppet show with your super-opinionated conjoined twin but that doesn't mean I understand the why or how of it much more than you do, sad to say."

He rubs the back of his neck, watching her expression grow a little darker as daylight starts to slip away. She looks so... tired. Getting up Roy piles some starting wood into the fire-pit. He could go for that kind of warmth tonight.

"Sorry, I'm batting a thousand on giving advice tonight."

Kendra dreams of horses. She rode as a little girl with her parents, but never like this. There's wind in her long red hair. All she can taste and smell is the dirt that coats every part of her being. She's been riding a long time, but there may be a stop to it. There might very well be an end and a rest for her and Nighthawk just over the mountains.

A loud crack wakes her from sleep, gulping and gasping for air.

Arsenal - No, he's "Roy" to her now. - is sleeping close-by. He's out, but she wouldn't call the sleep "sound." He has a hand reached out, like someone just left the dirt next to him. He mentioned being up here for months and yet, he still sleeps like that. Deep down, she knows Carter sleeps like that, too, and has been probably every night since she pulled him from that pool. "Probably," my ass. That's when the problem finally clicks in her mind. She doesn't want Carter. She never will want Carter. She also doesn't want to be involved in this, and frankly, she wishes she would have just died and been done with it ( ... )

The braaat sound is her only warning as sub-machinegun fire begins strafing the sky, aiming for her.

Yup. She figured. That's the only reason she was able to dodge. This confirms a few things.

See, Egyptian ghosts employ Texas burglar deterrent (Shoot first. Figure out if they're a neighbor when they duck.) when the fire of the sun falls from the sky. Someone down there apparently knows that. Another thing, he was expecting her. Combined it means somehow the weasel academic is somehow involved - and he's after something he thinks is a bigger than the threat than her mace. Time to cure him of that delusion.

With expert grace, Kendra swoops from the sky mace first.

Even as she smashes the rifle of one of the gunmen, four more can be seen, firing at her as she goes.

From a nearby ledge, Professor Sayer loads a rifle. The hired help should keep her busy while he sets up the shot.

He moves slowly, as if in a fog. As if he's not entirely himself.

She brushes right past any distractions. There's something she came here to do and nothing is standing in her way. Caves are mythology's transitional places so she flies to the one she more felt then saw nearby.

"I know you can hear me!" She calls out to Carter...Khufu. "You're body was destroyed last time, so you came here. I have the rest of you." She touches her chest. "In here. When you're not here, you're with me."

No response.

"I get it now!" She takes off her helmet. "This is my fate, and I made this choice when I tried to die. I'm not worthy of you. Aunt Shiera is. I'm not her. I kept trying to tell you I'll never be her. But I can be with her. I can help you. I can get you back to yourself, and I know that now ( ... )

"I love you too." Comes the response from the darkness. That's always been constant and unconditional, whatever else. The rest - is true, but that's not what gets a response out of him. Well, unless Queen says it, then its just fun to bait him.

"You did well."

Getting back home from multiple life changing events is always a let down. The survival adrenaline just stops and no matter what else you might feel, dog tired always plays the Ace of Spades.

When she opens the door, the three people she started with - Roxy, Kathy and Donna - are there. Kathy and Roxy's stuff is gone.

"After fighting together for so long," she comments wearily. "You two still do understand things better than I do."

"Yeah, maybe," Roxy hesitates. "But not without saying 'good-bye.'" she looks to Kathy and back to Kendra a few times before speaking. "We just can sense it. Things are different and..." She can't bring herself to say it, even when it's the truth of things.

Kathy smiles at Kendra gently and gives her a gentle hug. "Hey, it's time for me to look back to Gotham, I think, anyway. But goodbye isn't forever, right?"

"And I still need you," she assures Roxy with a gentle hug. "Just, maybe, not in the same way." She steps back and away from the former Batwomen. "The both of you...thanks."

Ever since then, Shiera has been quieter for her. It's nice, but it's lonely even though she still hasn't been feeling social. Alan Scott sent something about her JSA membership, and she keeps putting off replying. Maybe it's because St Roch always has too much to keep in line for one person. Maybe that's an excuse for not reaching any more higher understandings. Okay, she has a couple understandings. Booze is no longer her shrink. No more married guys, either. Her bills get paid on time. She eats okay. It's being an adult and her dark brown eyes reflect back to her a sense of pride and peace - so she no longer wants to rip them out of her sockets.

She even getting to be good at this hero thing all on her own. Maybe that's why she's being blessed or cursed with a quiet night.

Professor Daniel Sayer died in the fall, of course. But that didn't stop him. Because Sayer was only partly Sayer anyway.

And now he's not Sayer at all.

He sits in the building, the fire he's started starting to lick up the walls. The fire alarm has been sabotaged. If people are to escape, they'll need help.

And that's why Sayer waits on the top floor, hiding in wait, while the fire begins to spread rapidly.

Old folks home where someone paid off the inspector. Damn.

She swoops in, mace strapped to her side. It will only get in her way. She ferries out armloads of people until her Nth metal enhanced muscles are twitching and there's more of them in there! She dives into the blaze once again.

He waits until she's ferried out most of the people, or even all of them. He doesn't want to be interrupted with what must be done.

But when she's back in for her last pass, to be sure everyone's out, he moves out of his hiding place.

He moves behind her.

And he plunges his dagger deep into her side.
