She's still not any closer to peace then
she was back then. At least she's stopped trying to date, or deal with other heroes because she knows she's too messed up for them. Kendra has been managing St. Roch at a reasonable level of scum. Hawkgirl has finally come to one conclusion. This is Purgatory. When she slit her wrists she was an idiot

A loud crack wakes her from sleep, gulping and gasping for air.
Arsenal - No, he's "Roy" to her now. - is sleeping close-by. He's out, but she wouldn't call the sleep "sound." He has a hand reached out, like someone just left the dirt next to him. He mentioned being up here for months and yet, he still sleeps like that. Deep down, she knows Carter sleeps like that, too, and has been probably every night since she pulled him from that pool. "Probably," my ass.
That's when the problem finally clicks in her mind. She doesn't want Carter. She never will want Carter. She also doesn't want to be involved in this, and frankly, she wishes she would have just died and been done with it. The lover and fighter within her is Sheira, and it's always going to be Sheira, because she's the one with guts around here. Kendra is wearing some wings and using Sheira's gifts to do something about how screwed-up the world is. Kendra hasn't done a real and true honest-to-God grown-up thing without being pushed into it in her life or second life.
It's still possible to be an adult and still be a superhero. She thinks as she stretches before looking back down. If it wasn't, you'd have gotten lucky last night.
There's something she needs to do alone. It takes her a second to suit up. As Hawkgirl takes to the skies, she figures if she's cursed to die horribly, it's going to at least be with her shiny new big girl boots on.

See, Egyptian ghosts employ Texas burglar deterrent (Shoot first. Figure out if they're a neighbor when they duck.) when the fire of the sun falls from the sky. Someone down there apparently knows that. Another thing, he was expecting her. Combined it means somehow the weasel academic is somehow involved - and he's after something he thinks is a bigger than the threat than her mace. Time to cure him of that delusion.
With expert grace, Kendra swoops from the sky mace first.

From a nearby ledge, Professor Sayer loads a rifle. The hired help should keep her busy while he sets up the shot.
He moves slowly, as if in a fog. As if he's not entirely himself.

But Sayer finishes loading and begins aiming very carefully.

"You know it's time, Chay-Ara," he says. His voice sounds... familiar to her now. Like a voice out of her nightmares...
