Gliding on the Wind

She's still not any closer to peace then she was back then. At least she's stopped trying to date, or deal with other heroes because she knows she's too messed up for them. Kendra has been managing St. Roch at a reasonable level of scum. Hawkgirl has finally come to one conclusion. This is Purgatory. When she slit her wrists she was an idiot ( Read more... )

Kendra dreams of horses. She rode as a little girl with her parents, but never like this. There's wind in her long red hair. All she can taste and smell is the dirt that coats every part of her being. She's been riding a long time, but there may be a stop to it. There might very well be an end and a rest for her and Nighthawk just over the mountains.

A loud crack wakes her from sleep, gulping and gasping for air.

Arsenal - No, he's "Roy" to her now. - is sleeping close-by. He's out, but she wouldn't call the sleep "sound." He has a hand reached out, like someone just left the dirt next to him. He mentioned being up here for months and yet, he still sleeps like that. Deep down, she knows Carter sleeps like that, too, and has been probably every night since she pulled him from that pool. "Probably," my ass.

That's when the problem finally clicks in her mind. She doesn't want Carter. She never will want Carter. She also doesn't want to be involved in this, and frankly, she wishes she would have just died and been done with it. The lover and fighter within her is Sheira, and it's always going to be Sheira, because she's the one with guts around here. Kendra is wearing some wings and using Sheira's gifts to do something about how screwed-up the world is. Kendra hasn't done a real and true honest-to-God grown-up thing without being pushed into it in her life or second life.

It's still possible to be an adult and still be a superhero. She thinks as she stretches before looking back down. If it wasn't, you'd have gotten lucky last night.

There's something she needs to do alone. It takes her a second to suit up. As Hawkgirl takes to the skies, she figures if she's cursed to die horribly, it's going to at least be with her shiny new big girl boots on.

The braaat sound is her only warning as sub-machinegun fire begins strafing the sky, aiming for her.

Yup. She figured. That's the only reason she was able to dodge. This confirms a few things.

See, Egyptian ghosts employ Texas burglar deterrent (Shoot first. Figure out if they're a neighbor when they duck.) when the fire of the sun falls from the sky. Someone down there apparently knows that. Another thing, he was expecting her. Combined it means somehow the weasel academic is somehow involved - and he's after something he thinks is a bigger than the threat than her mace. Time to cure him of that delusion.

With expert grace, Kendra swoops from the sky mace first.

Even as she smashes the rifle of one of the gunmen, four more can be seen, firing at her as she goes.

From a nearby ledge, Professor Sayer loads a rifle. The hired help should keep her busy while he sets up the shot.

He moves slowly, as if in a fog. As if he's not entirely himself.

Looks good for a guy that Roy clunked in the head with a mag-lite. Time to see if the goons he brought this time were better then the meth-heads. She takes back to the air, swooping, diving, trying to get them to shoot each other.

They do, certainly enough.

But Sayer finishes loading and begins aiming very carefully.

Then it's time to take out the real problem. She starts to dive-bomb him, only to pull up when he'd have a clear shot she flings her mace directly at him.

He ducks into the cover, and the mace clatters uselessly to the ground.

He ducks back out and fires the rifle.

"Shit!" She spirals out of the way of the shot, but she completely crashes and burns on the ground.

He laughs and slides down the ledge to where she's crashed. He carries a dagger with him as he comes.

"You know it's time, Chay-Ara," he says. His voice sounds... familiar to her now. Like a voice out of her nightmares...

"I'm already past my expiration date!" she snarls, throwing a handful of dirt into his face.

The dagger flashes in the light, one hand blocking some of the dirt. "I know you, Chay-Ara," he replies, moving closer, as his voice bubbles up from her subconscious. "And you know me. You're afraid." He snarls, brushing the last bit of dirt from his face.

She scoffs, making a sweep for his legs and making the effort to pull herself up. "Of what? Death? Not this time."

He's knocked to the ground, but he rolls for her, attempting to stab at her as he does.

"Of losing Khufu!" he declares. "He will live without your love!"

"Strike two!" She gets to her feet and flips one of them out for a quick crack across this nightmare's jaw.

His head snaps back from the impact, but he lunges with the dagger. "Your love will rot and die, just as it always does!"
