John, while not feeling bad about his actions, understands what kind of position Hal is in between the Corps and Carol.
"Look...I know the way I came across was harsh, but...you know what I've been through. You saw what happened because of the Zamarons and their screw-ups. All the same, I know you and Carol have history, and I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life. We're both too stubborn for that.
How is Henry?" he asks.

Hal knows exactly what the Zamarons have done to John before. He was the second one on the scene of Katma's death -- John was first. And the years since this event haven't helped dull the pain.

"Hal...you remember a couple of years ago, toward the end of the war how Ganthet and Sayd told us about the War of Light prophecy? Back then, I thought maybe they were exaggerating, or at least I wanted to believe it.
But watching the whole thing with the Zamarons the other day...I saw it that it really could happen, and if it does--" he stops for a minute.
"You remember what they said would happen. Different colors, different Corps...and then the Blackest Night would descend on us all. I can't help but wonder if there's a way to stop the other Corps. Look, we know willpower is the most balanced of the spectrum. But fear, love, rage...those other emotions? They're powder kegs waiting to go off.
And someone is going to need to stand up against them when the time comes." John says.
