i couldn't agree with you more, honey. one hundred percent.
an original character can be as exciting and imperative to a story as a canon character. well written and interesting are important. self-insertion? not so much. i think the term Mary Sue is thrown around far too much these days. anyone who reads a fic with an OC and doesn't like it will call that character a Mary Sue.
the MSV and the sueniverse have brought me more intriguing and fun characters that i would never have had without them. and some really amazing friends.
I've said it (somewhere) before, but I think it bears repeating. I don't really have anything against OCs. I have a great deal of fun writing the few that I have played with, and an even greater deal of fun with the MSV. So, Daz, thanks for that. *smooches*
Self-inserty - lol. I think it's quite normal for a writer to put something of themselves in some of the characters that they write. And I agree that the term Mary Sue is way overused.
I promise you, one day I will finish the original! I will! I started writing the quidditch finals during my vacation so... we're almost there! Maybe once I see the last movie (that sounds familiar, doesn't it? lol)... But it's been a blast and I still can't really believe what it's all turned into! :D
Well, the negatives attached to the self insert idea are pretty similar to the ones with the Mary Sue idea. Like you say, I think a fair few writers pour something of themselves into their characters, even if it's just a thing they like or a quirk or whatever. It's not a bad thing at all, but again... fandom stigma. *shrug*
Reactions... 4 is a tease, because I can't get my hopes up, but it'd be great if I didn't have to wait another year. (also, November would mark the one year point since 3 started so... *shrug*)
Astonishing... I don't even care. But why is the version of Storm on the cover mohawk!80s!leather!Storm? Something funking going on there.
Wonder Man... LMAO NOBODY CARES SIMON GO AWAY! LMAO
I'm glad! :D Really, if it's not fun on some level... well, why bother so I stopped worrying and found an outlet. lol It's actually pretty damn liberating, I must say! And now you are one of us. ;) Can't wait to see how you do in the Avengers MSV! :D
