please do some serious research on your charities. I do not know the details on the ones you mentioned. They may be fine. Their books should be public. and if they spend more than 40% on administration, that is usually a good sign that the purpose of the charity is actually to support a nice lifestyle of the people working for it. check out the salaries of the exec staff. I ran non profits for years and there are a lot of tricks to hide how the money is being spent.

Health insurance is a big factor in the decision to retire. If you can stay until the university pays for a Medicare plan that's worth it in my opinion.

The first money I've gotten from my mother was an IRA set up in my name. I like that - I can't spend it until I retire!

I should be inheriting some IRAs from my dad when he passes. I'll probably be retired by then though.
