Zero Waste?

I bought 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste and Living Without Plastic for the Kindle. And I wishlisted bamboo toothbrushes and toothpaste tablets on Amazon. And I bought cloth napkins and reusable produce bags.

Italian went well. We wound up talking about the Roe vs. Wade ruling. (I thought that we might, so I prepared.) My teacher is fascinated by ( Read more... )

The plastics problem is horrible.

Walmart's are better than Aldi's.

Apparently, the big farmer's market here is on Friday eves(!) I guess they might be meaning to catch people leaving work, plus people going out.

I wish that they had a Friday night market here.

I haven't been to the one here, yet. So, I am not sure how well it does. I think it does do well. But, the thing I like about morning markets is that they weed out the riff-raff. And, it's a pleasant, natural thing, getting together with farmers. The thing I don't like about them is that I can rarely be up and active that early. Lots of normal people want to sleep in. So, not sure.

It doesn't take a lot to change things. If you felt like getting active, at least you would have an example to refer to.

My motto is "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good." If everyone did better, then nobody would have to be 100%. I use a lot of cleaning cloths and microwave my sponges so I can use them as long as possible. I still find paper towels are best for certain small jobs. I try not to buy stuff in plastic bottles like hand soap and laundry detergent and shampoo and conditioner, but I do use some stuff in plastic bottles. I use reusable shopping bags, and mesh produce bags, but sometimes I don't have enough mesh bags on hand and end up using plastic bags for my produce. I can't afford a hybrid or electric car, but I take public transportation to work and the car I do have is a compact sedan that gets 40MPG highway. I know I'll never be zero waste, but I am definitely reducing my waste. Baby steps.

My BFF has been reducing her waste, especially plastic waste, for a while now and it is DEFINITELY a challenge. She loves her toothpaste tablets - I tried them and did not like them myself. She brings her own containers to the grocery store for bulk items (they shop at a co-op and the farmer's market primarily) and uses cloth, well, cloths to wipe up spills, use as napkins, clean, etc. But there are definitely things where you just can't get completely away from the plastic or waste in general. Their town has a composting program that she participates in as well.
