Who would have ever guessed that *I* would be researching responsible spending?!

I'm spending this lovely Thursday at work surfing around for a decent pattern to crochet myself an iPod case, since I doscovered earlier that this week that iPod + sun = OWMOTHERFUCKERTHAT'SHOT. Which led me to this other train of thought, which I'd like to blame on my father, who used to lecture me on the "true price" of beef ( Read more... )

You can store more than music! I've got an entire season of Firefly and one of 24 on mine, since my poor little laptop is maxed out on space for that kind of stuff. Plus, I have the same opinion about my musical tastes, but had the opposite reaction - more likely to wait fifty million different albums, so I might as well have enough space for them all.

But, yo, I would never argue with a gift, lol.

Well, I've got an iPod mini, and for me the logic was price. When I bought my iPod mini, it was nearly £100 cheaper than a regular white iPod. Yes, I admid that my 4gig storage is significantly less than the smallest 10gig regular iPod, but there was no way for me to spend £220 on a regular iPod. I wanted an mp3 player that would work with my mac because my diskman had died, so iPod was clearly the way to go. Since I've bought mine, however, Apple have changed the prices. The iPod mini is still £60 cheaper, however. While the regular iPod is far better value for money, the iPod mini is more affordable, hence its apeal. To be honest, well over half of my CDs and mp3s that I've downloaded fit on my iPod mini. I rarely have to delete al album to make room for a new one. Aside from the fact that the mini enabled me to replace my dead diskman almost imediately, the £100 that I 'saved' by buying a mini went on horse riding stuff, once I'd saved up the 'remaining amount'.

But your factual economics is ABSOLUTELY spot on :-)

I know exactly what you're saying (which is why I've never really considered a mini), but your math is a little off. 249-199=50 not 150. Also, 299-249=50 not 150. *g* I only point it out because math? Totally not my strong suit.

Err, um, yeah. Changed that. But, actually, still proves my point, YAY.

You totally proved your point. Just wanted to make sure no one would say "but you got the math wrong!" to try to disprove you. ;)

I have a regular-sized 10G iPod that barely holds 1/3 of all my music, but I can also see someone buying a mini who doesn't own a lot of music, or who wants something smaller to go work out/run with or whatever.

Financially, the mini doesn't make much sense, you're right. But some people just don't own a whole lot of music, I guess. Or they like the shiny. *G*

Exaaaaactly. If I ever got an ipod, it'd be to replace my 5 dollar walkman from like 8 years ago to work out with.

... incidentally, this is why I don't have an iPod at all. Because I don't want to spend even $150 for that. Someday, perhaps. :)

(It also took me quite a few years to upgrade to CDs...)

The same thing with the iPod Shuffle. Why the FUCK would you buy an iPod shuffle of $99 which only holds 512mb, when you could get a mini that holds 4 gigs with much more shiny, for just $100 dollars more. Wait for that next paycheck!

However, Shuffles are easier to give as gifts or something like that. Breaking into the $100 range is always intimidating. Psychology at work. But still.

i agree. plus you can't even choose what you're going to listen to if you get a shuffle. there is no little thing that says "you are listening to mogwai" or whatever. however, the whole stick-of-gum comparison is cute.
