Help from musically knowledgeable people

Hypothetically, if I were to audition for a part with the character description: "Female. 16-20’s. Beautiful girl next door. Strong pop/rock singing voice required" (ignoring the fact that I am not, in fact, stage beautiful), what would I sing that would allow me to really show off? I'm not very knowledgeable about much rock music, though I can ( Read more... )

Go with something that you love and you can pull off.

I mean, the first song that came into my head was "I dig rock and roll music" (old, totally random) because the way I would do it in my head, I feel like I could rock it. It's a bit ballsy to start right off with an octave like that, though. Do something that you can rock.

I mean... look for something with variation, some big intervals and some small, maybe some interesting rhythmic qualities, but most of all, something that you can pull off. If the intervals mess you up, go for something that's more your style.

Something from Rent, maybe? Or Aida? Any musical that has a pop or rock lyrical style would work.

Do you have the Alantis Morisette CD "Jagged Little Pill"?

At the end there's an alternate version of You Oughta Know that has less instruments or a cappella and we (me and Becca and Kelsey and Steph who are in my room right now) were talking about the song and started singing it and we were thinking that this song would be great for you because it has a lot of great energy and you could really act it.

Good luck! :)

Certain songs from Rent, Tommy, Grease, Hairspray, The Wedding Singer, Wicked, Aida, Mama Mia, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Hair, Little Shop of Horrors.

If you need help finding specifics, I can help, but I'd need to know your strong range and your total range, and the sort of songs you feel most comfortable with, as well as your voices strong traits that you really want to emphasize/show off.

When would this audition be?

Monday April 13th. In New York City. For the Spiderman Broadway musical, because there are open auditions and because I can. I obviously don't expect anything to come of it, and it's mostly for the fun of having the story to tell, but I still worry about making a fool of myself and want to put in a good showing ( ... )
