So sad! I'm glad Lupin finally quits being a noble prat . . .

Thank you! Yes, I'm thinking that wonderful moment in HBP, in the hospital wing, is soon to arrive...:D

These lyrics have always seemed very R/T to me. Waah! This is gorgeous and heartbreaking, and I love the irony of the title knowing that this is not the end for them.

Yes, this prompt absolutely screamed R/T at me! Obviously any excuse for a good wallow in a heartbreaking moment, but thanks for the lovely comment and for liking the title. I was thinking that Remus has concluded, It cannot be and Tonks has concluded, You think again, mate! LOL.

Oh, how very well Tonks knows Remus. I can't help feeling glad that she can tell he does still love her, even though he's telling her otherwise, with his carefully not looking at her. It works so well the way you contrast that line with the way that Remus does look when he looks at her, and what she knows that means.

Heartbreaking and lovely.

I always think it was such a giveaway in that infamous HBP scene when Remus refused to meet Tonk's eyes, and then wouldn't look at anyone else who was telling him much the same. Which made me try and use the 'look' idea as a reason for rejection and yet hope at the same time. As we've often said in conversation, it's hard to imagine Tonks arguing all year (nor such as Molly persisting with the subject) if they weren't pretty sure how he felt.

Delighted you found this heartbreaking! (Though that doesn't sound quite right, lol.)

Thank you! :) Yes, I've always thought she must know he loved her, and so must everyone else otherwise such as Molly would have let the subject drop long ago. I know some areas of fandom make a big deal out of Tonks losing her magic, but she still does her duties as an Auror, fights at Hogwarts etc. Like a lot of us when we're cut up about a relationship, it might show outwardly (and in) but we still carry on.

That title is great. And I love the Instead, and all the instead implies. Am I crazy or uncaffeinated for also seeing time smooshed together in this piece, and liking it very much?

I'm trying to stun you with the speed of my Thank you - for once, at least! I am a big fan of Tonks understandably looking like she's in bits throughout HBP, but still carrying on with earning a living and fighting the bad guys, so yes, there is a lot of feeling from both of us in that Instead. LOL.

I didn't purposefully set out to jump around in time, but the last part became very much what's happening with her right now, as well as what was, once I'd started it off with the instead. So I'm nodding in agreement at the smooshing effect - and very relieved you like it. :D
