In Conclusion
He looks at her as if finding something he didn’t know he was searching for. Something, perhaps, that Remus thought he should never have. No surprise, then, that it is made up of equal parts joy and pain. She knows she didn’t imagine that, or the warmth of his mouth on hers. Which makes his leaving and his rejection of them (not her), almost impossible to bear.
“I’ve realized,” he says, carefully not looking at her now, “that this was wrong from the start. All my fault.”
Which means, though she doesn’t say this, that he’s reached a conclusion only to allow himself to stop thinking.
Instead, she pushes her lank brown hair back behind her ears and concentrates on the work in hand. It was work and war that brought them together in the first place. Only now she’s seeing, all the time, the look that makes a lie out of all his words.
