so we watched Hachi: A Dog's Tale last night. or rather, i *tried* to watch it through the smear of tears that were pouring out my eyes.
unbelievable. the screenplay is based on a true story of an Akita
in Japan in the 30's who sat by the train station every day waiting for his master to return from work. one day, his master didn't come home, but Hachi kept waiting.
i googled "dog movies" today to see if i could come up with another movie about dogs that i liked remotely better than this one. back in the day i liked Where the Red Fern Grows (though the book was far superior) and i even had a beagle named Little Lady Annabel or "Annie" for short, after Little Ann in that story. (who wasn't a beagle, but whatever. she was a hound and i love that book!) i also love the Snoopy movies. um. obviously. Snoopy Come Home was the very first movie that ever made me cry. i must have been 5 or 6.
but i can't think of a single better dog movie than Hachi. it didn't rely on the wacky dog antic hijinks that most dog movies rely on. you know, "look at the funny dog, honey," okay back to the story. not that i'm above a funny dog story and wacky antics. Turner and Hooch? when Hooch chews up the entire inside of the car? COME ON! you see it coming a mile away, but it's still DAMN funny.
but this. oh god, this. i cried watching the trailer for this. and of course, there were plenty of cute dog moments, but they seemed so real. like a real guy with his real dog and the cameras just happened to be rolling. it was perfect. the dog's expressions were perfect.
i just can't get over how moved i am by this story. the entire story, direction, acting... the dogs ♥ ... the movie was so well-crafted. what a gem.
only... it was so good, i'm not sure my heart can go through watching it again.
