No Water, Shade, or Bathrooms (or Bobby's Birthday on Shell Island)

Apr 10, 2015 22:40

Wednesday was Bobby's 34th birthday and also the last day of our trip, so we saved the excursion we were looking forward to the most for this day. Shell Island, as I noted in the last post, was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged the channel between the Grand Lagoon and the Gulf of Mexico to allow for the passage of shipping ( Read more... )

It was! It was a beautiful trip all around. :)

My mom is 62 and my dad is 72, so unless I'm misjudging from your pictures, you are still younger than my mom and definitely younger than my dad! :D (But I seem to recall you recently posting a picture of your daughter, and I was like, "Holy crap." I still have the Christmas picture she drew when she was like 8 or 9 hanging up in my study!)

Nothing makes me feel like I'm getting old than seeing my friends' kids grow up. Whenever Rhapsody posts pictures of hers, I'm like, "OMG. I remember when they were born ..."

What a beautiful, wild place and so at odds with the usual perception of Florida as being full of condos and retirement homes! I suppose that's the difference between Panama City and Miami! Congrats to Bobby, belatedly. This is quite a birthday month - Bobby, Oshun, my son Jamie, my sister-in-law, two of my co-workers. My goodness. :)

July must be a busy month! :D I know a ton of people born in September (like me) and always figure it's the holidays, the cold, all the drinking ... ;)

We've been to three places in Florida (Naples, Tampa, and now PCB), and this was probably the least developed of the three. There were a lot of natural spaces, and it seemed like there was a state park or forest every few minutes when we were driving around. Panama City Beach itself, along the shore, was full of the typical high-rise condos and hotels, of course, but it wasn't far to get to a wilder space, although we never managed to lose completely the sound of traffic.

Gah. Still making me miss a place I really don't. Though this time it's more of a regret I didn't know half of these places existed. PCB to me was always urban (mind, we were only ever there for an afternoon or so; the thing I remember best was a giant maze).

Happy belated birthday to Bobby!

I hear you about the weather shift; I suffered the same thing when I came back from FL in February. It made the winter seem even longer.

I'm glad you had a wonderful time!

We pretty much skipped the urban part entirely. We drove through it the first day (and got stuck in traffic ...) and afterwards were like, "Well, we saw it, so we can skip it forthwith." It was Spring Break madness, and neither of us are keen on that.

I remember that maze, though! :D

The weather has thankfully warmed up since our return home. It's creeping up on 70F now and sunny out.

Those photos are fabulous! A reminder of why the Gulf Coast is the only part of Florida that appeals to me.

Thank you! I've been all up and down the Florida coast on the Gulf side but never on the ocean side. I hear "Atlantic Ocean" and think "Ocean City," which may or may not be accurate but definitely keeps me from wanting to pay for a flight for what I can get three hours from home!
