Does "Davi" ever need to die? Can't he stay?

So, this has been a question which has bugged me ever since I got my first job.  Being professional vs. being who and how I am.  I haven't been "David" since middle school.  Since the beginning of HS I have gone by the name of "Davi" or "Dav" or some similar enough name.  Honestly, it feels weird when telemarketers or professors call me "David".  ( Read more... )

A lot of people have different personas they portray in professional and in casual life. It's not unusual at all. You can maintain "Davi" while using "David" to achieve your professional goals and let you buy a nice big house with a pool and puppy (or whatever your goals are). Think of "David" as a tool to be used for "Davi"'s enjoyment! Not in -that- way, though I suppose you could if you wanted to, but you (hopefully) know what I mean overall.

As for if "Davi" can work in a professional sense, I don't see why not, but you're right, going into an interview with "David" listed on your resume and then asking to be called "Davi" is a bit unorthodox and may put the interviewer back a step. Or they may think it's neat and quirky and like you more for it, depends on the interviewer :P

I second this... and PS coming from experience... just cuz you graduate doesn't mean you are "grown up" or that you have to. trust me. It just changes the things you are responsible a little bit

There's ways of using Davi as your form of address while having paperwork that says "David." Anything formal, like résumés, transcripts, etc. should say "David." Then, when you go to interviews, tours, and the like, simply introduce yourself as "Davi". Most people take their cues from what you tell them, not what's listed on your paperwork.

Another approach-- although paperwork from institutions will have your full name on them, your résumé can say "D. [middle name] Snowdeal". That will also prompt people to call you by the name with which you introduce yourself.
