They're very good. And yes, Pullman wrote them explicitly to be a counter point to books like the Narnia series, with its christian themes. Hope you enjoy them.

My husband is a huge fan of all of this but felt the film The Golden Compass, a horrible adaptation. I saw a quick interview with Mr. Pullman on YouTube and he is quite happy with the show's adaptation. As I am new to all this - never reading the books, I like it a lot. I have child-like issues with what's happening to the even-if-they-are-CGI daemons, but it's an intriguing show.

I was really disappointed in the movie (having read the books first). It was just so rushed and all over the place. The series has done well by it so far, though, I think. The ambiance and characterizations are spot on.
