Iron Man Anime - by Warren Ellis!

Jul 25, 2009 10:19

Apparently Warren Ellis (best-known to the masses as the writer of Transmetropolitan) is writing a crazy anime-style Iron Man series. The trailer looks fucking fantastic, and I have always LOVED Ellis's take on Iron Man. This looks exceptionally promising. If the series lives up to the promise of this trailer, I can very, very easily see myself ( Read more... )

Before I watched the trailer I had my doubts, but this looks really promising! The character design is really nice and so is the animation. I think I'll definitely be watching it when it's released.

Yeah, I had my misgivings (among which the phrase "looks like a fucking Gundam" placed prominently), but this trailer has entirely dispelled them.

Whereas the Wolverine anime looks to have lived down to my lowest expectations.

Counterpoint: The Wolverine anime is atrocious.

I actually watched a few episodes of the Iron Man: Armored adventures show a few weeks ago on livestream and they're surprisingly good. I may be biased because I expected celshading to take over animation years ago, at least for this kind of show, and it's been a long time coming.

Did you see the Warren Ellis GiJoe? It's up on youtube.

Oh, yeah. That Wolverine thing... just looks foolishly ill-conceived. I watched the trailer and read the description, and I'll tell you what my single BIGGEST problem with it is: Logan's body-language is all wrong. There's no rage there, no focus, no force of will. I just see him languidly swishing his arms around in an almost lazy way. That's not Wolverine. Not at all. Worse than the demonic origin, worse and more foolish than changing his hairstyle (which I view as important to the character design as Batman's cape or Superman's "S-Shield" symbol), the fact that this character doesn't FEEL like Wolverine makes it impossible for anyone with any fondness for the character to accept this as a valid interpretation ( ... )

I know, right?

In the mean time, though, have you read any Iron Man comics by Warren Ellis?

Actually, I haven't watched or read anything Ironmanish in the slightest! I should probably fix that soon.

(Also sorry for replying late, I don't usually check my email often and I wish LJ would give you notice on the site when people reply to comments)

No worries.

I would strongly recommend Iron Man: Extremis (as I've said elsewhere in this thread). It's basically Warren Ellis re-starting the Iron Man franchise in his own image. New concepts, an updated origin story (which the live action movie borrowed heavily from), and basically a fresh introduction to the character. It's brilliant stuff.

This looks better than that Wolverine shit, at least.

Yeah, well. See my above comment in response to Hentaikid for my thoughts on that topic.

Hey, I just remembered: Warren Ellis has a weekly webcomic called "Freakangels." It's a neat post-apocalyptic story set in a near-future London, and every Friday morning, he uploads six new pages. It's been going for a while, so there's a good deal to read already.
