I would introduce him to your family beforehand. He can meet your folks in person (and show them how wonderful and respectful that he is). If other members of the family can't meet him face to face right away...or ever, email everyone a cute picture of the two of you. and let everyone know you can't wait to introduce him at the party.

Oftentimes, if you act like something isn't a big deal, it isn't, whereas making apologies for something is likely to make people assume there's something to be ashamed of. So assuming that they're sheltered, and not actually actively racist, just have him along, ignore any initial surprised looks, and everyone will likely have got over it by the end of the party.
