FWIW I am not a fan of people porting Twitter posts to LJ (nor LJ posts to Twitter). If people want to see the other and aren't a user of the other service, they should just subscribe to it using an RSS feed reader.

My motivation in doing it this way is for archival purposes. It allows all of my blogging (if you consider Twitter a blog) to be consolidated into a single location that doesn't require jumping through hoops to back up (like Twitter). I'm much more active there than here lately, and it's felt like I'm losing thoughts 140 characters at a time by only having them on Twitter.
You're right that people can just follow my twitter stream if they're interested in it. Ideally I'd like to still have tweets cross posted here, but as hidden entries so as not to clog up anyone's LJ friends view.
Hidden entries sounds like a good way to do it. You can also poll your FL to see if some of them don't have Twitter and still want to know what you're tweeting, and based on that instead have a filter.
