Exactly !!

Of course, I do support churches from being able to refuse to marry same sex couples if it violates tenets of their faith.

Marriage commissioners though, well they can suck it up. Part of the job. Don't like it? Quit.

My grandfather outlaw - who married Laura and I - did exactly that and I have to say I was pleased with how he did it. He is very right wing and opposed to same sex couples being allowed to have jobs much less get married, but when it became legal in BC for same sex couples to wed, he simply quit as a Marriage Commissioner saying that if that was law, he just wouldn't be involved.

Nothing forced on him ... all his own choice. Sounded fine to me.

Yep, i would tend to agree -- it's perfectly legal for churches to discriminate on the basis of religion and they've been doing it all along despite the Charter, so I'm not sure why the big concern about same-sex marriage now. Of course they wouldn't *have* to perform same sex marriages, just as they don't have to marry people of other faiths. I see no contradiction.

And while I disagree with your father-out-law's stance, I do applaud that sort of integrity.

yeah -- but the 3rd provision in bill c-38 says that no religious group will ever be forced to marry same-sex couples. The framers of that law are really bending over backwards to accomodate such religious orgs, not that it does much good.

At least most of our conservative nutjobs in this country are reasonably connected to reality. Leave alone the nutjobs, and that makes me really optimistic about the non-nutjob conservatives!
