I find socks go a lot faster if you just do abut 20 rows of ribbing at the top and then do the rest in stocking stitch.

I think that may well be what I'll do for the next pair. On the other hand, I don't think the ribbing slowed me down nearly as much as the forgetting to knit any for a few weeks!
