It seems that the entire experience was a test of his ability to learn about others without compromising his own - allegiances? How well can he play the games others care to play, while keeping his own objectives and games close to the chest? Seems an interesting lesson in it's own right.

Well summarized. And that is essentially what this lesson is about. Plus learning self control. He's still quite young and the energies of being born under Atronach and its excessive magicka has its effects on the body and mind.
