Wikifur / Wikipedia

If anyone reading this who is in Furry fandom hasn't browsed by wikifur and checked to see if they have an entry on them yet, they should do so as soon as possible.

Many people in the fandom have had bio's posted to Wikifur by others who may or may not know their facts. I recently spent quite a few hours correcting information about me, about TheRead more... )

Mighty suprised was I to discover words I'd written in WikiFur, in the entry concerning Westercon. Plagerism is the sincerest form of flattery, I guess.

If someone took your words without permission, feel free to take them out (fill in the edit summary box stating what you're doing and why, so other editors know). We do not support copyright violation, and would far rather our editors wrote their own words. :-)

The problem with an open-source knowledge base is that there is little or no control on what goes up there, and incorrect information can spread like a virus to other knowledge-bases.

All too true. I remember when the link on Christian Furs mentioned hollyannvix and xianjaguar alongside links to "Furry Nazi" and "Furry Hitler".

I was surprised to find that someone took the time to enter my name there. 2-3 published stories are enough to present yourself as a 'furry writer'? Heaven help the fandom's writers if that's true!

Anyone who calls Holly Ann and/or Xian Jaguar a Nazi obviously has no ability to look beyone someone's regligious or political preference. It makes as much sense as calling gays communists.

To be fair, I _think_ whoever posted that meant "Christian Furs in general are intolerant and Nazi-like"... which, now that I think of it, still does nail Holly and X-Jag.

Yeah, I got mentioned. Yet another example of justification to my nickname of "The Great Unknown".

"Steve Addlesee is an artist and inker. He has worked on such furry comic titles as Katmandu... Wright on his project "Carc and Slide"."

I certainly hope whoever wrote that entry wasn't tired from all their research.

Lol!

My entry is kind of odd, written like some sort of insperational peice that you'd see in Reader's Digest. I decided not to change it partly because it's factually true, (if very melodramatic), and partly because I think it's kind of lame for people to write their own entries. (it's always really obvious who writes their own entries in this thing, which invariably end up being overly flattering puff peices.)

One thing I don't understand is their "voluntary exclusion list". As long as something's not sladerous and/or untrue, then people should not be able to remove their entry wholesale. I don't think it works that way with real encyclopedias, after all. Besides, the person's name is listed on the exclusion list, so it's not like their name isn't on the site anyways!

I'm tempted to amend that entry to reflect the more accurate number of published credits while I was involved in furdom.

Well, if you want to go all-out you can make up your entry to look like these:

http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Charles_P._A._Melville

http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/Verix

Although I honestly think entries like that fall under the "self-promoting puff peices." When I look at those I don't think "Wow, I'm sooo impressed at this person's enormous accomplishments." What comes to mind is more like: "Jeeze, someone is a legend in their own mind. 9_9"
(I always figured if someone had a burning need to know more about my work, then they can go to my website and/or LiveJournal. And, according to my site tracker, hits from my WikiFur entry happen fairly often.)

But, to each his own.

I checked out Wikifur several times. I have yet to see an entry about me.

But of course, I have seen an entry for brokkentwolf that calls him a slow and horrible fursuit-maker.

I assume you mean this edit, which was removed five minutes later - or perhaps the talk page? People can say what they like on the latter and it probably won't be removed unless there's a really good reason, but that doesn't mean it gets in the article proper unless others agree.
