And the verdict is in...

Yes, I made meatloaf and despite the smell of hot, burning, blacktop tar filling our apartment, the stench did not get into the meatloaf. It was actually pretty tasty and we've got plenty left over for another meal and a couple of sandwiches. Plenty of left over whipped potatoes too ( Read more... )

Thanks. I'd tell *my* kitties, but their egos will become way too large.

Yeah, I make meatloaf with oatmeal instead of bread crumbs.

It's interesting how different regions make it different ways! I don't use either...hmmmm.

My mother always used oatmeal, so that's what I became used to. My husband's mother used bread crumbs (as did it seem, everyone when I was growing up) and I have tried using bread crumbs, but I just don't like it.

When I got on the net and looked up meatloaf with oatmeal, I found a lot of recipes, which tells me more people use oatmeal than I thought. (So my mom was not maginificently unique as I once thought *g*)

What do you use to stretch meatloaf out?

Ooh, be careful with tatties, I believe they're poisonous to cats and dogs.

Yeah, everything is poisonious to cats and dogs now.

When I was a kid, they made chocolate treats for dogs. I'm not kidding, they were called chocolate kisses and the first ingredient on them was chocolate. And we fed these to our dogs. Also, my dog Shilo had a habbit of stealing into the cupboard, taking chocolate cake mix, shreading the box, and eating it.

It never harmed her, more than one time where she vomited, and if you ate an entire box of chocolate cake mix, you'd probably vomit too. Yet, to hear people talk, the mere sniff of a chocolate bar wrapper will KILL YOUR PET INSTANTLY!

I don't think a sliver of potato peel, maybe an inch long and half an inch wide is going to kill Jesse. Especially when even after playing with it, there was still significantly more peel than not left.

Yes, I exagerated a bit when I talked about how much peel there was. It was for the sake of a good story. If I worried you that I'm a bad cat owner, sorry. But, I'm actually a pretty good cat owner.

I can't eat goldfish crackers, bacon, or french fries without sharing a bit with Afreet.

I can't eat cole slaw without sharing it with Chrissy.

And I don't dare bring ham into the house without sharing. I'd probably be killed in my sleep if I tried it.

Onions are really, really bad for kitties (and dogs), as they can cause renal failure.

(Not trying to be all OMG you fed your cat what!!, but I've had a cat with renal failure, and it wasn't fun.)

As I responded to someone above, they list chocolate as one of the "Oh noes, this is DANGEROUS STUFF!" Yet, growing up, they made chocolate flavored treats for dogs where the first ingredient was chocolate. Also, I had a dog that used to regularly steal and eat chocolate cake mix from the pantry ( ... )

I am totally not trying to say you are a bad pet owner. I was 95% sure you'd be like 'duh, I totally knew that.'

One thing I've learned from my job over and over again though, is that if you don't bring the totally obvious up sometimes, bad things happen. 95% of the time, people look at you like you're an idiot for stating the obvious. But 5% of the time you save everyone's collective butts.

Plus, you have a lot of other cat owners who read your journal. I know I had no idea about onions until my cat had kidney issues. (Which wasn't onions, it turned out to be a genetic defect, but it was a question we were asked several times.)

I'd not heard about potatoes being an issue until the previous comment.

I'm sorry if you were hurt, and I think you are a great cat owner and any cat would be extremely lucky to live with you.
