I enjoyed it a lot but I always get really frustrated at the "sweet girl had to turn to evil porno/sexual "deviance" to get by, then finds god and all is well again" angle. I would have HATED the movie if it was fiction. But, because that's pretty much precisely what happened, I loved it and thought it was really well done and incredibly well-acted. It did seem to have a slight bias to it, but I kind of just took the biased angle for camp.
I wish that people would stop blaming sex and sexuality and sexual freedom for taking them to the "dark side," and stop labelling all those as "evil things" that people only turn to when they've been abused or rape. SUCH IS NOT THE CASE, PEOPLE. Not always, at least. Sigh. Like I said, that was actually the case for Bettie, but I still like to think that she was in control of her sexuality and liked being powerful and intimidating to men... they played that down a lot in the movie and made her a little too early-Britney Spears virginal saint... grr.
I agree with the whole, almost convienient sum up to her life. As much as you feel compassion for her abuse as a young woman, her decisions were her own whether she consciously knew what she was getting into or not. It's also really difficult because you have to consider the time period and how outrageous it was to think of porn, masterbation or even certain costumes as "Evil and corrupt." There can't be evil without good, so some good MUST have come out of what she did and yet they don't touch on it very much throughout the film.
It's so damn true. People generalize WAY too much because it's easy, because they don't want to view things from all sides. Ignorant turds.
