afternoon of June 13th: Exploring

Mar 15, 2006 22:26

Ron wandered down the cobbled street of Diagon Alley. The best part of being an adult was that he didn't have to justify where he was going to anyone. Just grab your coat, out the door, and Bob's your uncle. He didn't have any particular idea what he wanted to do today, but there were a few people he hadn't seen in a while, and he couldn't think ( Read more... )

Fred was in the store alone, save for the odd wandering customer. He kept grinning randomly, but theorized that that was not such an unusual thing for the owner of a joke shop. The interlude with Oliver had been extremely nice. He looked up at the sound of the air horn and left the counter to wander over to greet his brother.

"Only one of us here." He draped an arm around Ron's shoulders. "And wait.. I'm a redhead?" Fred grabbed a hank of his own hair in an attempt to get a look at it. "How come no one ever mentioned this before?"

Ron held up a chunk of his own hair for comparison, grinning at the identical colour. "I'd say so, mate. What, did you think you were a blonde all this time?"

Fred smirked, "Wellll, I have been having a lot of fun, and you know what they say about blonds."

A blush not unlike the colour of the newly compared hair spread across Ron's face. Were all of his siblings having se- er. Sex. Having sex. Were they? There could be no mistaking the aura of happy afterglow radiating from Fred's grin.

"Oi, you too?" he said, shaking his head. "A bird or a bloke?"

"Well, actually..." Fred broke off with an eye roll and whispered "don't touch anything you think looks 'scary'" before he walked over to help the witch who had finally selected her purchases. After several minutes of small talk, asking about her niece's latest project, her nephew's quidditch practice and giving her a free sample he waved Martha out the door.

"Oliver Wood," he said, from across the room and apropos of nothing.

Ron rolled his eyes. Scary looking. Honestly. He'd face V- er- You-Know-Who. Well, his followers, anyway. What could there be in a joke shop that could be scary? He leaned forward to pet a couple of the purple pygmy puffs in the bin. One of them looked up, docile and cuddly, and then bit him.

"OW!" Ron yelped, jumping back. "Stupid little git."

He turned to frown at Fred. "Oliver? Where? I don't see him."

Fred walked over, grabbed Ron's hand and kissed his finger better. He knew it would annoy/embarrass Ron, which was, of course, the point.

"I was going to tell you that I ran into Oliver the other day. He's playing professional Quidditch. Apparently he's still great with a broom." There was no lilt to his voice. Ron had asked a question, Fred had answered it. It was not Fred's fault if Ron failed at innuendo.

Ron yanked his hand back, glowering. "I'm not four, you know," he said. That he felt somewhat better was not something he was going to say out loud.

His brow crinkled. Why was Fred telling him this? It wasn't as though he and Oliver had been especially close. Ron knew him only as that Quidditch crazed bloke that Harry was fond of.

"Look, I was thinking of exploring a bit. Never been allowed out in Diagon completely without parents or guardians, you know? Want to come with me?"

Ron's face lit up as he saw the boarded up ice cream shop. "Let's have a look then." He grinned at the twins. "Much rather go poking around and see what's going on in there than go to some stupid Muggle place, wouldn't you?"

He peered curiously at the building, wondering what lay inside.

Fred looked around the Alley, noted that it appeared practically deserted and cast a quick desception charm. "I'm game if you are, George." Looking once at George to get his nod, Fred grabbed Ron around the waist and apparated them both into the store.

Ron squawked at the sudden invasion of his personal space, but the odd squeezing sensation of Side-Along-Apparition was over before he could entirely wrap his head around it.

"Do you ever get used to that?" he asked, massaging his temples for a second. But then he realised just where they were and his eyes widened. "Whoa. This is great!"

George had apparated at the same time into the store and was taking a mental inventory of the place. It was definitely deserted, but it had the look of disarray. Something had happened before the shop closed down.

"Anything interesting over there?"

Ron grinned at George. All right, so this had nothing to do with how well he could kiss. It was good to know. Of course, he was also going to pocket a few cherries and keep practicing...

He looked at the papers strewn about him where he'd dived. "Not much. Just some old pictures and things- hey, look at this." On the floor were several pictures of old Florean Fortescue, the glass of the frames smashed. "They really did a number on this place, didn't they?'

Fred walked over to Ron, holding out a hand and dragging his brother to his feet. He brushed some of the dust off of his jumper and made tutting noises that his mother would have approved of. "Just look at the state of you," he said in fair imitation of the woman.

Fred grinned and then took the pictures from his Ron. "Interesting. Bit dim in here though, shall I just keep these and we can look at them more back at the shop? 's not like anyone's going to miss them."

Ron bit back a snicker. "Thank you, Mum," he laughed, and he reached out and flicked off a stray bit of nearly melted ice cream from Fred's shoulder.

"Yeah, I don't see why not. I doubt anyone would ever notice they're gone." He pocketed a few more cherries surreptitiously for further practice at home.

George had walked over to peek at the pictures over Ron's shoulder and caught a moving Florean when he heard noises behind him.

"Gentlemen, time to go. Fred, meet me at Alderaan."

George grabbed Ron and apparated him to a spot outside near the shop. Fred and George had decided on an arbitrary spot to go to if they had ever found themselves in a pickle with dissatisfied Wheezes' customers. And they gave it a muggle name so wizards would be confused.

Fred appeared just after George and Ron. "Sorry 'bout that, but I heard noise that wasn't us. There must have been detection charms that we missed. C'mon, let's get back to the shop."

George lead his brothers in through the front door where they heard Charlie chatting up their newest employee.
