The absolute only place that works is at bars. The other patrons don't want to say anything and the bartenders and waitress smile through their gritted teeth at the customer who is always right. It takes work to get tips and that means humoring those kinds of people.
Yeah, but if that dude comes in every single day and you want to keep him doing it you humor him. What else can they do? Bar people are weird. It takes very special social skills to work in a bar.
It's been my experience that people who act like assholes like that but are genuinely well received are usually only playing at being assholes, and are otherwise very likable. It's possible he's done something in the past to ingratiate himself the folks who work the bar so that they are willing to chum up to him. Perhaps he's a great tipper, perhaps he's been genuinely kind when called for, etc.
And I agree with Chandra. Bars have their own rules of social etiquette and conduct, that on the surface flies in the face of our conventional knowledge and wisdom but seems to make perfect sense if you know/understand bar etiquette.
When at a bar or drunken party one compliments a ladies nails, for instance, this is fine. But on the PATH at the Hoboken stop....while running after her....not as good. (My poor Carlos....taking care of me....he should have a medal.)
