I just hopped over to the Houlihan's for lunch in the town where I work (Fairfield, NJ) and played some Buzztime Trivia.
This is the second time I've seen this old man there with his wife. This time, when I sit down at the bar, he says to the bartender, "Hey, you've got a lively one there!"
Over the course of my stay, he just pops up randomly with friendly jibes and insults. He occasionally would yell to the bartender, "This is comin' outta your tip! This service sucks! Where's the manager!" At other times, he would attempt to bond with another table at the bar, saying "half your tip is going to me!" All the while, his demure wife (who seems to adore him) would laugh at everything he said.
Hottie waitresses would go over and give him hugs, and look at his wife and say, "You're cheating on me."
I just really feel like I missed out on something in life by not being able to dish out inane bullshit to draw a specific kind of attention to myself. I personally find it annoying as all hell, throwing all that insubstantial self-promotion around. What it says to me is that his presence in the room is more important than comfortable silence, but other people seem to eat it up. I'm a little jealous of that, honestly.
Is that how you make friends and influence people? Just bark your catch phrases into people's lives and hope it sticks?
