Dean was sitting outside on the deck, barely twilight, the cold from the night still raising the hair on his arms. He heard the floorboards creak behind him from inside the bar and hoped it wasn’t River again. His fingers automatically brushed against his gun, out of habbit and he turned his head.
"Oh! Didn’t mean to be a bother," Dean let his hand fall away from his gun as that girl, whatshername, Kaylee, walked out of the Roadhouse, her bare feet scraping against the wood floorboards.
"Not a bother," said Dean, letting his forearms settle against his thighs. "Wanna sit down?"
Kaylee smiled at him and sat down cross legged next to him staring out into the sky. Dean just stared at her.
"Why’re you starin’ at me?" asked Kaylee after a moment, still looking at the sky. Dean shrugged.
"You’re pretty," he said simply and Kaylee’s head snapped in her direction.
"‘Cause I’m pretty?" she asked and Dean chuckled nervously.
"Yeah, you’re pretty. Why? Is that wrong or something?"
"No, that’s just shiny," said Kaylee brightly.
"What does being shiny have to do with anything?"
"Shiny is shiny!" Kaylee said, just shrugging naunchalantly. "It just is."
"That makes sense, in a really, really weird way," said Dean, shaking his head. "Does everyone say ... shiny?"
"Yup, everyone I’ve met," said Kaylee. "‘sides you. And Sam when we first met him. But he picked it up all quick."
"He learns fast," mumbled Dean. Kaylee stared at him for a moment a deep frown forming on her face.
"Why’d you get so mad at Sam?" asked Kaylee. "Ain’t you two supposed to be family?"
"Every family fights."
"River and Simon don’t," said Kaylee, but stopped herself. "At least before Sam showed up they didn’t fight."
"I heard Sam was causing trouble."
"Sam don’t cause trouble," said Kaylee. "It just...happens!"
A smile flickered on Dean’s face for a moment. "You’re a very optimistic person, Kaylee."
"Don’t do no good goin’ through life with a frown on your face," she said. "People can’t help smilin’ when they see someone else smile."
"I really haven’t done much smiling lately," said Dean softly, looking away from Kaylee, who turned her head to look at him, the light brushing against his face as the sun started to rise.
"Maybe you just need someone to smile with," said Kaylee, just as softly, nudging Dean’s shoulder with her’s. Dean looked back up at her.
"You wanna be that person?"
"I will if you want me too," said Kaylee. Dean leaned closer to her, his hand reaching up to cup her cheek. Their lips brushed as the door swung open.
"Kaylee, Mal’s looking for-go se*." Dean and Kaylee looked up to see Sam standing awkwardly in the door way, looking from Dean to Kaylee. He swallowed and opened his mouth to say something, then closed it and just turned and walked back inside. Kaylee giggled as the door banged shut.
"Now I’m gonna have to kill him-" Dean was cut off as Kaylee turned his head towards her and kissed him full on the mouth. She pulled away from him after a moment, her grin spreading back over her face.
"Now you have something to smile about," she said happily. She stood up and left Dean sitting on the porch, staring after her.
