Part 1

Mal was sitting in his bunk, the heel of his hand pressed against his forehead. He heard his door open and someone climb down the stairs, watching Sam’s feet hit the ground.

"You wanted to see me, Cap?" asked Sam, leaning against the ladder. Mal nodded and beckoned Sam into his room, getting up from him bed and letting his arm fall to his side.

"I want you to come with me to see Niska," said Mal slowly. Sam’s eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"Sure, I’ll take to Jayne and-"

"Jayne’s not coming," said Mal. "Just you, me and Zoe."

"You want me to be your third guy?" asked Sam, looking at Mal with a slightly freaked out expression. "Why?"

"I have very bad feeling about this meeting," said Mal. "Not the meeting itself, but the job. I need you on it. You can handle things like this, you’ll see it through."

"You’re asking me to pull this job?"

"Jayne’s got some respect for you. He’ll listen to you-"

"Mal, you’ve got to be joking-"

"Sam, this ain’t gorram negotiable," Sam closed his mouth and sighed, lowering his head and nodding.

"Yes, sir," he muttered. "Anything else?"

"Yeah," said Mal, opening his sink and turning it on. "River’s coming too."

.

"No way in hell!"

"That’s what I said," said Sam loudly, looking back at Simon as the two followed Mal to the dining area.

"You actually put in a little more cursin’, Sam."

"She’s my girlfriend, I love her. Ta ma de, Mal this is suicide!"

"Which is preciously why she’s comin’ along," said Mal, stopping at the door and turning to look at Sam and Simon. "If she ain’t comin’ there ain’t know reason why we shouldn’t just off ourselves now."

"Mal-!"

"She’s goin’," shouted Mal, ignoring both Simon and Sam.

"Hwoon dahn," muttered Sam, shaking his head and turning back around, heading in the opposite direction. Simon watched him go for a minute and then followed Mal into the dinning area.

Mal looked up at Simon as he walked in after him. Stopping at the head of the table and staring at Mal as he examined a flask, sniffing the contents for a moment and then shrugging and giving it a swig.

"You don’t need me to threaten you," said Simon, staring at Mal, who shook his head.

"No, Sam’s got that covered."

"I actually think he’ll kill you if she get’s hurt."

"You mean if you don’t get to me first?" asked Mal. Simon shook his head.

"He’s lost too much already."

"Nothing’s going to happen. Not this time. Niska, he wants something."

"Obviously, or else he wouldn’t be sending severed ears our way."

"I mean something he can’t get himself. It’s going to be dangerous."

"It always is."

"This is Zoe, we’re closing in on Niska’s Skyplex, preparing to dock."

"Showtime."
