An example of slang that goes WAY back )

Hope you enjoy them! Adding vernacular can really add to the atmosphere of a story, I think - good examples of Sci-fi that come to mind, are the uses of asian language in both Bladerunner, and the wonderful Firefly series.

They give a bit of backstory to the society without having to write it outright - a bit of history, if you will.

Me too! I speak a smattering of a few - but not enough to get by other than the basics.

One of my sisters is a language whiz - she speaks 7 all up, and 5 of them fluently - one of them Japanese, which she also reads and writes - she lived over there for about 6years, and worked as a teacher - so if you ever need a bit of advice that way - let me know - she may be able to help - and you won't be given a bum steer, as they say - so many translations are inaccurate - plus she knows the slang.

Just can't stop laughing at the 'Your face here' thing ...

Seriously.

My daughter who is trying to do her homework in the next room keeps going 'Mum! Stop laughing! No, really, Mum, it's getting really annoying now. Argh!'

He looks so damn fine there ... and, err ... so damn young. Grr.

Thank you for those sites. I may well have been to a few already, but as you know, I need that research at the mo!

You've most probably visited the Victorian one - but if you haven't, it has a good selection of sexual slang mainly, but a few others as well - I think that one would actually be good to add to the vernacular of the Wizarding world in general -

I noticed Pig-widgeon was listed there - it means simpleton - and, as the Wizarding world tends to use less of the modern slang - I suppose writers could use a few of the terms there to add to their universe, just for a bit of colour.

I'd consider that site just a starting point, though for deeper research - but a good starter, I think.

The regency one seems very well set out - and the thesaurus is a handy touch.

I haven't ever seen any HP fan fic set in Elizabethan times - but thought it might inspire someone to consider it.
Adding vernacular can really add to a story's atmosphere -

This is very useful (all the info in one place so I don't have to plough through my reference books!) Would you mind if I linked?

And yes, Pretty Alan. That reminds me I need this 18C stuff for my Tavington/Valmont fic.

User inamac referenced to your post from Not the Erotica Meme saying: [...] very useful links to Victorian, Elizabethan and Regency terminology in her Slang in erotica post [...]

Been over there at last! That first site is great - it is my first port of call for the Hook fic. Just love the idea of him taking a stroll along Cock Alley!

Yes, it's quite a good site, isn't it?
I had a giggle at testicles being called whirlygigs...lol!
and for some reason, "to put Nebuchadnezzar out to grass" was another cackle worthy one for me.

Some are very interesting in that you can still hear derivations of them today - I've heard "nug" (pronounced noog, like book) over here, and nuggie (noogy) - is a roughish, playful cuddle we give kids over here (you cuddle them, and rub your knuckles over the top of their head).

Oh! and I loved "kiss my cooler" meaning kiss my arse! lol!

I'm sure there are more detailed sites out there, but that one covers quite a few very well, I thought!
