The erotica writer's meme that's been going around has gotten me thinking about period slang, what's used today, and it's history.

An example of slang that goes WAY back )

Hope you enjoy them! Adding vernacular can really add to the atmosphere of a story, I think - good examples of Sci-fi that come to mind, are the uses of asian language in both Bladerunner, and the wonderful Firefly series.

They give a bit of backstory to the society without having to write it outright - a bit of history, if you will.

Me too! I speak a smattering of a few - but not enough to get by other than the basics.

One of my sisters is a language whiz - she speaks 7 all up, and 5 of them fluently - one of them Japanese, which she also reads and writes - she lived over there for about 6years, and worked as a teacher - so if you ever need a bit of advice that way - let me know - she may be able to help - and you won't be given a bum steer, as they say - so many translations are inaccurate - plus she knows the slang.

Seven! That's amazing. I can manage three. It does help if you've lived in a country ...

Some people just have that talent - I don't unfortunately. I can pick them up quite well when using them, but I lose it if I don't use it.
The fact that you can speak 3 impresses the hell out of me!

Me too - I pick them up fairly quickly if I'm immersed - but if I don't use them, I lose them.
