November 18th and Freedom (Patrick, Erin, Saul)

It had taken a long time for Patrick’s arms to heal and they still weren't completely better, but while he had convalesced, he had been fed with hearty and filling food and there had been no more torture and deprivation. He had to have a bedside service every day, but pretending to pray would never be as bad as the things he had suffered in the ( Read more... )

Patrick didn't really want to be escorted by the scary lady who wanted to kill people, but Saul nodded and told her that it sounded like a good idea and it was decided.

"Heh. London then. Alright."

But Patrick wasn't sure it really was alright.

"Are we going tomorrow?"

Erin shrugged a little. "We can," she told him. "Or you can stay here a while longer. Frankly, though," she added, "I don't think you'll find much of interest to do with Saul and the boys unless you fancy going back in to meet those people again." Her lip curled up at the edge, knowing he wouldn't exactly be jumping to that idea.

"No! No, I was just-" Patrick had been about to say 'tired' but then he looked at Saul and Erin and he closed his mouth again. These people had saved him. Saul had said they fought the people who had done this to him. And fighting was never easy. He had no right to be tired among heroes.

"We can go whenever you are ready," Patrick said to her, though he felt he wouldn't ever be ready. Not really.

"Tomorrow," she told him. Then she gave him a smile, forced though it was. Some could keep doing this fight and hold onto the ability to be joyful and easy, but Erin was sure she wasn't one of those people. Every year she worked with Dead Meat a little more of herself was chipped away. So all Patrick could have from her was a forced expression of camaraderie.

"I'll wake you not too early and we'll catch a flight. They won't take you again." Then she laid her hand on his shoulder and squeezed lightly. Yes, that was some good camaraderie. She looked over at Saul as though to say See, I can do human still.

Patrick yelped as she squeezed his shoulder, however lightly she tried to do it, it still hurt.

Saul covered his mouth with his hand because pain wasn't funny, but Erin showing camaraderie and accidentally hurting someone was kind of funny.

"Can I...sleep or something?" Patrick asked, sounding miserable.

"Oh. Right. Sorry." Torture and tender human bodies and all that. She really was losing touch with all this killing and draining. She turned away and made a hand gesture towards one of the other men around so he would come join them. "Carlo will show you where you can get some sleep."
