Float Downstream [00]

By all rights, Mary should be in the city's hospital, doing her monthly check up instead of looking out at the water front. Especially since that hospital is only a block away from where she is, and she's supposed to be honor an appointment she made ( Read more... )

Alan, on the other hand, is pretty eager to get to the hospital. Every rehab session where he can lift a little more weight or react a second faster is a reminder that things can and do get better. Of course that makes the sessions where there's no improvement - or even some backsliding, because despite all his efforts those exist as well - crushing disappointments, but Alan has a good feeling about today ( ... )

"...Mmmm?" Mary blinks slowly when that voice breaks past that pleasent fog blanketing her mind, but at least she doesn't start. Her pupils are a bit too wide when she looks over, and for a moment she can't even place the face with a name or a memory. Her mind chugs for a moment, before something finally slides into space, and she can speak.

"Oh, you're that Alan Crawford, the-" She somehow has the presence of mind not to say 'the cripple' out loud, even with her thoughts still floating around and her tongue loose.

Even though the only reason she can dig up the name is is due to the wheelchair; there aren't many students with those at the school. "...From the hockey team?" Mary says instead.

"It is. I was just watching the lights..." She trails off again as she says that, to go back to watching the city lights on the far side of the bank.

Alan's smile turns into a slight frown as he turns his head to look at what Mary seems to be watching. A pleasant view, but nothing that seems fascinating. Certainly nothing to make someone trail off in the middle of a sentence. Her manner is a bit off-putting...Isn't she supposed to be one of the brightest students in the school?

That's the problem with only knowing people by reputation, he supposes, trying not to point out that he's formerly from the hockey team. That's obvious enough. "That's right," he confirms instead. He watches the other side of the bank for a moment, but the silence stretches on between them. He's not sure it bothers her, but it's starting to eat at him. "Do you usually come down here? I come this way a lot, but I'm not sure I've seen you before."

"I don't...No, I don't think I've ever seen you before, Mister Crawford." Mary says, and her eyes squint for a moment as she tries to think back. "How odd. I know I've been here before several times, so I think I would've seen you." That concentration doesn't last long, though, and she goes back to looking across the river again, still entranced by whatever. A half smile has also worked its way onto her face, and she can't help but sway back and forth a little where she sits.

"I like to watch the lights..." She murmurs softly, and it takes work to keep that sing-song tone out of her voice; enough that she's only half successful at it. Mary also doesn't have the presence of mind to stop talking either, and so she continues. "They look so nice when they dance."

A young man in a business suit walks by, looking distracted. He had just spent some time helping a frantic father look for his son without success, and it left him worried and anxious. He didn't remember ever feeling anxious like this before, which only made him feel worse.

He doesn't even give Mary a glance, but his shoe catches on a crack and he stumbles a little, dropping his suitcase. Shoot.

Right now Mary doesn't quite have the fine coordination when it comes to turning around without falling over, so she ends up having to cling to the back of the bench when she looks at where the noise was coming from.

"...Sir? You need to be careful; the ground here isn't very straight, or stable at times. I know." And she certainly sounds like she speaks from experience on that.

Caspar blushes a little, embarrassed that someone saw him trip. He carefully picks up his briefcase, then looks over at the woman addressing him. She's very pretty, but there's something a little off about her expression. "It... really?" Caught off guard, he doesn't know how to reply to that.

Mary nods slowly, still careful about making the scenery and the colors blur too much.

"Yes, it truly does. That's actually why I took a seat, myself; it's best to ride these things out." She gestures to the bench, and several more close by, to back up her point. "Better then risking a fall, at the very least."
